2 hour consultant meeting booked- 17 weeks?

As title suggests, currently 17 weeks pregnant with second pregnancy.

had my booking in meeting where I was told I would be midwife led even though I am geriatric pregnancy and have my first proper midwife appt this week. 12 week scan and combined test all came back low risk.

out of the blue this week I had an appointment booked in for this week with the consultant on the same day as the midwife apointment. I called up and the said they can’t tell me what it’s for but to prioritise the consultant over the midwife appointment if I can’t do both.

just had a message to say to allocate 2 hours for meeting.

I have no idea what it’s for- 2 hours seems a bit excessive!

no high blood pressure/diabetes

any ideas?

How was your first birth? I had this because I had an emergency section first time round.
also, any medical history, or family medical history e.g. thyroid, genetic conditions? They go into more detail on this if you are older, again I had this recently for thyroid issues and being older

I doubt it will actually be 2 hours with the consultant; more likely a 2 hour clinic during which you’ll be seen.

My consultant appointments were all clinic times not specific appointments. You turned up during the two hour slot (normally after your midwife appointment so that the midwife has done all the routine checks and the consultant can see the results without doing them him/herself), and you’re seen eventually during the two hours.

It's not necessarily 2h but could be up to 2h. It will be with an obstetrician to assess if you need any extra monitoring or support in pregnancy, potentially due to your age or anything else flagged from your booking appointment. 2h us the upper time limit but it will dependent on how much there is to discuss.
I'm high risk due to medication I'm on and a mental health condition. I'm under 2 obstetricians and have had an appointment with both which were 20-30 minutes each. The first one was to discuss the risks in pregnancy with my medication, she told what extra monitoring I'll need which lasted about 15 minutes, there was another 10 minutes on my family history of blood clots which had changed since my booking appointment.
The second was to discuss my mental health, I got acutely unwell after having my daughter so we had 10-15 minutes discussing what had happened, then 15-20 minutes on what support could be put in place for this pregnancy, what referrals I need, contact details for mental health midwives and a brief overview of the sort of things they would be putting in my birth plan once I'm further along.
So yes could be 2h but roughly it takes 10-20 minutes to discuss any potential issues and what can be put in place to mitigate these risks so it easily could be half an hour or less.

They say to allow 2hrs because you may be waiting 1hr45min in the clinic to be called

thanks for responses

Had an emergency c-section but they booked the consultant meeting for that at 32 weeks to discuss birthing options once they see how the pregnancy progresses.

consultant appt is in the morning at the hospital, midwife appt in the afternoon at the community centre.

just came a bit out of the blue as all appointments booked in I have been given a reason for.

I would guess it’s the c section. Everyone I know who had one (elective or emergency) had an appointment with a consultant around this time. In mine they just asked about the reasons why the emergency happened, discussed options for birth and generally checked how I was re birth trauma. As everyone said it won’t be 2 hours, it’s a window because these clinics always overrun and they will do vitals and urine sample as part of it

Was your emergency c section done when you were fully dilated? Just wondering if that is the reason why as it can be a risk factor for subsequent preterm birth so it may be to scan your cervix and just check any risk factors for that. Usually done at 16 weeks in my trust but you aren't that far on from that.

Yes i was fully dilated..which they picked up at the booking and then said we will send you an appointment with the consultant at 32 weeks to have a check up and discuss options for birth plan at that point.

they have sent through that consultant appointment.

hence why i am a bit confused! Maybe they got it wrong and forgot to mention this appointment.

It's probably related to the c section. I imagine it's that you do definitely need the appointment at 32 weeks but on review of your notes the consultant wants to meet with you to make sure there's nothing else you need in the meantime.

I didn't know my second obstetrician appointment was even with an Obstetrician! I had already had one booked in for around 17 weeks and then another one came through at 22 weeks at a different hospital and all I knew was that it was part of the perinatal MH clinic and I'd see a midwife, support worker or Dr.

daisydalrymple · 10/06/2025 14:15

How old are you op?
I was 43 giving birth to dc3, so had to see a consultant fairly early on, but he then said I’d be midwife led as very low risk. Might also be that they want to assess no additional risks to do with age.

In that case I imagine that this is what your appointment is for- to check your cervix as part of a transvaginal ultrasound, carry out some swabs and talk through how things are going.

Foreverdancingtothemusic · 12/06/2025 21:17

Just updating incase anyone needs it in the future.

was about a 10 minute appt purely to check cervix length. Another appt in 4 weeks and if it’s all showing the same I’ll move back to being midwife led.

no other conversations about anything else…they did the scan and said ‘see you in 4 weeks’
