0.5 gin….

I picked up these gins in Tesco in the alcohol free aisle and they literally say alcohol free on them but they also say 0.5% so that’s not alcohol free is it?🤔

Would they be okay to drink 1 or 2 or is it best to er on the side of caution and avoid altogether? It seems quite misleading!

0.5 gin….

if you Google, it does say to avoid alcohol free drinks when pregnant because they can contain 0.5% alcohol or less, very misleading, saying that, plenty of women drink the odd glass of normal wine so… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally I’d just automatically choose a soft drink. Maybe just have a tonic water with ice & lemon?

BurnTheWholeThingDown · 06/06/2025 15:51

It’s actually less than 0.5%, but there’s a weird bit of legislation that means that have to say it. Something to do with the de-alcoholising process.

There’s similar trace amounts in fruit juice but they don’t have to be labelled as such.

You'll get a lot of mixed answers here but:

  1. I have drunk lots of the alcohol-free Kopparberg while pregnant, which is 0.3%, I think?
  2. The average amount of alcohol in a ripe banana is around 0.2%-0.4%
  3. I am sure I have read somewhere that 0.5% alcohol isn't enough to raise your alcohol content in your blood.

I freaked out after I drank the first alcohol-free cider and THEN read the label. I reasoned afterwards that lots of people have an ordinary glass of wine every now and again in pregnancy and this is substantially lower than that.

I thinks the sugar content is probably of more concern in pregnancy, but each to their own and I haven't exactly held back on sweet treats so I'm not going to judge.

It says less than 0.5% so same as a fruit juice. It’s essentially alcohol free.

This.

It's alcohol free. It has to say 0.5% as there is a trace of alcohol in. Nowhere near enough to get into bloodstream etc. you'll be fine!

DP has just come home with a bottle of alcohol free Tanqueray (i.e. gin but they can't call it that apparently!) which is completely alcohol free apparently, and some bottles of tonic. Lovely tangy juniper flavour.

£14 deal at Waitrose.

Oh dear... I love an alcohol free beer... But they usually say 0.0??

If anyone challenges you ask them to point you at the evidence that natural fruit juices (also >.5% rather than 0.0%) are a problem for pregnant women.

OTOH, don’t bother as some twat will use that as an excuse to add even more things to the list used to police pregnant women.

Just enjoy your legally alcohol free drink if you wish - there is no evidence even that the occasional unit is harmful, especially after the first trimester. However post here about having a few sips of champagne for the toasts at a wedding and just wait for the pitchfork posters to rock up 😂

Made me laugh hehehehe, it's very true 😅

It's fine. 0.5 is nothing. I ate a very over ripe banana this morning to save binning it that probably had more alcohol in it. I've been drinking alcohol free beers at events/restaurants throughout. They have varied from 0% to 0.7% and haven't thought twice.

usedtodrink · 18/07/2025 00:49

A banana is about 0.4 for alcohol content. Some of these beers are 0.05 so nothing.

The 0.5 is half a percent but it's still so low that you would have to have so many and so quickly you wouldn't have any room in your tummy. They are perfectly safe for driving or during pregnancy . hope this helps
