Cervix closed - how long does this guarantee be before labour?

Concerned about early labour (due to history). Cervix checked last week all nicely closed. But... Couldn't it open at any moment? How long between it showing any signs of getting ready for labour and actual labour? Should I be pushing for regular checks and if so how regular?

How many weeks are you? Normally if you’re at higher risk of preterm birth you’d be seen in the preterm birth prevention clinic and be offered regular ultrasounds in the second trimester to check your cervical length. Have you not been referred to a consultant?

Following out of interest. I am high risk for pre term labour and
my cervix is being measured every 2
weeks. It’s been hovering around 27-28mm and closed. I have also wondered if it could quickly open and go into labour between the two weeks -
but I assume no or low risk or nhs would scan me more

35 weeks now, wasn't referred to preterm clinic - don't quite meet the requirements but doesn't stop me being worried. Pushed for the check last week as got v worried and now not sure what that means - @Givemethesun exactly, I wonder if there's any point asking again in a week or if all it does is say I won't go into labour that day! Would be great if they can give you any reassurance on that next time you're in

A cervical check only tells you what the cervix is doing in that moment and it’s actually more risky to keep having unnecessary exams as there is a risk of infection, waters breaking, and bleeding. I know you’re anxious but a better and less invasive way to monitor whether labour is starting is to know and pay attention to your body’s cues. If you’re concerned that labour is starting of course ring for advice or go in to be checked but regular exams have more risks than benefits in this case.

I was 2cm dilated for 4 weeks before I gave birth. There is no real way of knowing when you will go into labour.

It can change very quickly, as a pp has said, an examination only tells you what’s going on at that moment.
I had a high, closed and unfavourable cervix on a Saturday afternoon, and went into labour the Sunday night.
Signs of imminent labour can also happen weeks before it happens as your body prepares, or it can be just hours before or not at all.

Thanks all that's super helpful, I'll leave the checks then!
