Would I be ridiculous to go to A&E for this (again)?

I'm 17 weeks pregnant. For the last couple of weeks, I've had clear watery discharge, quite a lot of it, no smell.

I mentioned it to my midwife, worried that it could possibly be amniotic fluid, and she suggested I go to A&E to get seen by a doctor and swabbed/checked out.

So, off I went last night, I waited for 7.5 hours and wasn't seen until I couldn't take it anymore. It was 3:00 AM and I was feeling sick, exhausted, and couldn't sit in the chair any longer.

I thought I'd try other options the next day, assuming maybe EPU could help.

I tried calling maternity triage today first who said they couldn't see me until 20 weeks and to call my GP.

My GP called the EPU for me (can't self-refer), who said they could possibly scan me next week but I should go to A&E in case to get swabbed. My GP agreed (apologetically) and said better to be safe than sorry.

I just feel ridiculous going to A&E twice in 24 hours for what is most likely just excess discharge. I would of course rather know for sure and find out, but I felt they were judging me there and the thought of waiting all night again makes me want to cry!

Should I suck it up and go? Or anyone have any other ideas?

Definitely suck it up and go, sorry. You need to know what it is and they will make sure you’re seen by EPU if you need to be.

I think it’s ok if you’ve been advised to go, especially if you’re worried enough to seek help.
take a cushion, snacks and a book - I’ve literally just got back from a 4 hour trip to A&E and that was long enough!

What about getting some sleep and then going really early tomorrow morning?

Overthebow · 03/06/2025 20:36

Yes absolutely go. You don’t want to mess around with pregnancy and you’ve been told a couple of times sto go.

NuffSaidSam · 03/06/2025 20:38

You should definitely go, but why do you keep going so late? Go during the day.

Go early in the day and get seen

Thanks everyone. I've been working all day and didn't hear back from the GP about the EPU until this evening which is why I haven't been yet (for those asking). I think I'll try to sleep a few hours and go early tomorrow morning.

I had this quite a few times during pregnancy and convinced myself it was fluid but it was excess discharge. My mw reassured me that it was all normal and my LO is now 12 weeks! Hope all is ok x

You poor thing, I had a nightmare with this in my first pregnancy! Gushes of watery discharge and ended up in triage about 4 or 5 times -the doctors, completely understandably, told me they couldn't advise me NOT to come in because they couldn't be sure that this time wasn't amniotic fluid. It never was - I just happened to have a lot of watery discharge! My triage saw patients from 16 weeks though - that's very unfortunate that you're having to go to a&e. Just remember your work can't legally do anything about you going to triage during work hours. Take a blanket and plenty of snacks and just try and make the a&e trip as bearable as possible. ❤xx
