Low lying placenta - experiences please

Ive just had my 20 week scan and was advised that I have a low lying placenta.
The sonographer said it isnt covering my cervix but is quite close.
She said it has time to move and I would probably need additional scans along the way.
Im already consultant led so imagine they will sort this.

Has anyone had experience of this and what was the outcome?

I had this in my first pregnancy, I was really worried about it but apparently it generally moves further away from your cervix the further into pregnancy you get, mine moved “far enough” away and I gave birth vaginally with no issues. Hope it’s the same for you!

TiramisuTastesDreamy · 23/05/2025 20:57

I had this - mine didn’t move- so I was on hospital bed rest for several weeks and then had to have a c section 4 wks early. Kept being told how I was the exception and not the norm, most move enough to give birth naturally, so hopefully yours will too !

I had this, it moved up by the week 32 scan

I had this with my DD. I was on bed rest from 23 weeks due to risk of placental abruption. By the time she was born, 9 days past due date, it had moved away and she had turned (was transverse) and everything was fine. Normal vaginally delivery and she's now 24. Didn't happen at all with my second pregnancy.

Thank you for your replies.
For those of you who ended up on hospital bed rest, how close was your placenta to your cervix?
The sonographer didnt tell me, just said its close and I would need extra scans.
I stupidly googled it and now ive scared myself about having to be admitted and heavy bleeds etc.

Mine was covering, not just low lying and didn’t move (although some can). I had a bleed at 31 weeks and ended up in hospital. They let me out after a week but I couldn’t be more than 20 mins from the hospital and had to have someone with me at all times. Second bleed at 36 weeks (which the consultant predicted) and had a c section then. I’d been on steroids to help lung development so DD avoided NICU.

As the PP said, I do think this is the exception as most do move.

Mine was low withDS2. A high percentage maybe 90ish will move by 36 weeks. Mine moved. He is 10 now and currently stuck to like a limpet.

Blue2020 · 24/05/2025 11:35

I had this with my son, it was anterior and also fully over the cervix with no gap at 20 weeks, by 32 weeks it had moved enough not to be an issue. I still had a csection but it wasn’t due to this.

They didn’t tell me to go on bed rest, just that I would have a scan at 32 weeks to check, that most move. If it didn’t it would be a csection, and if I bleed to call the hospital up. Interestingly at 26 weeks I did have a bit of a bleed, however I think I caused it because I stupidly ran up some stairs. The hospital said to put a pad on and if I had any more to call them back or if it was heavy to go to the hospital. Luckily I didn’t have any more and even then they didn’t say to go on bed rest.

Mine was completely covering my cervix by the end, started as low lying and got lower (apparently not totally unusual with ivf pregnancy which I had)

In was very lucky and had a very active pregnancy and no bleeding at all. Exercised throughout.

However I was given only 48 hours notice for a c section after last scan. (Placenta was ‘low’ at 20,28 and 32 weeks) and as scan at 36+5 showed it was covering so I was booked straight in. I did have quite a lot of bleeding during the op but they had extra surgical staff and a cell/blood salvage machine and was expecting it. It just meant being in recovery a few hours longer while they put that blood back in.

nomorechoco · 24/05/2025 14:17

i had it twice. The first time, it just moved back up and out of the way. I think is the most common outcome so try not to worry. Second baby I a low placenta and bleeds and then placenta previa so spent the last 3/4 weeks in hospital (as was nearly 1/2 hour from home) and c-section at 39 weeks.

sesquipedalian · 24/05/2025 14:20

I had a low placenta at 19 weeks, still low at 22 weeks but by 32 weeks it had moved up and they weren’t worried any more - ended up having a SVD.

TimSamandLulu · 24/05/2025 14:20

I had this. At 20 weeks it was touching but not covering the cervix. I had a few more scans as it did move upwards but slowly. About 36 weeks it was deemed the correct distance to have a vaginal birth (although I had a c section for other reasons). No bleeds or other problems.

JungleRun21 · 24/05/2025 19:09

Thank you everyone, this is reassuring.
I will wait to see what happens when I have my next consultant appointment and booking extra scans.
I have a really heavy feeling in my lower abdomen already so not sure if this is something to be worried about or not?
