Travelling with a 3 month old - am I mad?

I'm expecting my first baby and we're planning a big family holiday for about 3.5 months after he/she is due. It will involve a long (8 hour) train journey to France. Is this reasonable? I've heard people say that travelling is actually easier when they are little, but I'm not sure whether I'm crazy to consider it!

Not crazey. I could have done it. It helps if you are exclusively breastfeeding and use a comfortable sling.

Depends on the 3 month old. Sorry, that's not very helpful.

For me, it would have been an absolute nightmare with ds1. He would have screamed pretty much non-stop (because that was what he did at that age). In fact, we went to France when he was 4.5 months and regretted it.

With ds2, who is just 3 months, it would be fine. He is a very chilled, laid-back kind of baby.

Agree that travelling is easier when they are little as they tend to sleep rather than spend the whole time running up and down the train. You do tend to cart a lot of stuff round with you though.

hmmm it depends on the baby tbh

i wouldn't have dome with ds1 as he is pfb and i was still taking 45 mins per nappy change at 3 months!

ds2 - NOT A CHANCE he screamed for his forst 6 ish months

DS3 _ yep i would but only if i ddn't have to bring the otehr 2

We went away when dd was 4 months and it was fine, dont have to pay for a seat on the plane and they fit on your lap and dont get up and run around! Just nmake sure you pack nappies (formula if you use it as some countries dont have the ones you use)

I know there is a site that you can pay to get items delivered to your accomodation but sorry I dont know the name (try searching in google)

It was actually fine and prob easier than a long journey would be now (dd 2 1/2).

My sister just took her 6 month old to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand then back via Singapore. Said my nephew was wonderful on all 4 x 12hr+ flights.

She is a very determined person so didn't mind it at all. I am very lazy and don't think i would have coped so well!

2point4kids · 20/05/2008 17:29

My 2 would have been fine at that age.
Not a chance now they are older lol

Thanks everyone, I'm thinking that it looks like we'll be OK, just have to hope we have an angel of a baby! I'll be with my mum and sister (who has a 2 yr old - oh dear!) plus dh and rest of family, so I'll have plenty of help. I think I'll go for it! It's a skiing trip and whilst I'm fully aware I won't be skiing every day, it is the only chance I will get of getting near the snow next winter!
Thanks for the thoughts anyway.

I did a lot of travelling when dd was a baby. It was easy peasy. Have sling will travel. Oh, and a strong dp to carry the luggage!

Ds screamed solidly for the first 6 months EXCEPT on the 17 hour flights we did at 7 and 10 weeks.

The combination of white noise, movement and unfettered bf did the trick.
