big bump=big baby?

People keep insisting on telling me how huge my baby must be, especially when I assure them that I'm not having twins. I'm only 32 weeks. My bump measured 32cm at my 30 week check and my midwife said that was fine. Does a big bump always mean a big baby? So want to get my HB but am scared they'll say no if baby is a whopper. Any experience of this anyone?

I have a HUGE bump (53 inches around middle at 39 weeks) and measuring 2 weeks ahead on fundal height throughout.
Baby is said to be very big (according to a series of growth scans due to unexplained bleeding) with a big head).....

I'm going to be SO embarrassed if I give birth to a 6lb baby after all this -

I have to say, this is my 4th baby, and my tummy muscles had not exactly "snapped back" into place after the other 3 babies either.....

I see from the scans my water level is supposed to be average.

I honestly look like I could be having twins - and can barely walk I'm so big.

I can wear size 12 maternity trousers on my legs - but they no longer fit over the bump!

prettybird · 28/05/2008 16:30

I had a small bump and the midwife said she expected baby to be c.6lbs, 7lb at most.

Ds was 8lb 15lb. I blame my excellent sotmach muscles for keeping my bump "neat"

You can't tell by the bump size - all sorts of toher factrs are in play.

Amberc · 28/05/2008 16:36

I have a massive bump and baby is 9lb now at 38 weeks, deeply engaged but no 'drop' so I still can't breathe and his feet are in my ribs. Cie I have been told that because the baby is large they may not let me go to the home from home birth centre too. Hey ho - whatever's safest is best i guess as more chance of intervention for a chubster. PS it is really boring when people keep asking if you are sure it's not twins! I used to make up a due date at least a month before the real one to tell people I wouldn't see again - much easier!!!

becklespeckle · 28/05/2008 16:37

I had a huge bump with all 3 of mine and they were 9lbs 0.5oz, 9lbs 4oz and 9lbs 15oz!

However I am fairly short and am very short in the body so baby had nowhere to grow but outwards!

If MW was not worried about bump size and baby size then I am sure it is fine and you will be okay for a HB. I think sometimes people just don't know what to say when you are pg so they feel it necessary to scare you by saying how bug your baby must be! Don't listen. Big baby doesn't always mean a difficult birth either x

MiniMarmite · 29/05/2008 18:56

So glad it is not just me. I am 28 weeks and my fundal height thingy is 28 cm i.e. as it should be, but everyone keeps insisting on how huge I am, must've got your dates wrong, must be twins/triplets etc.

Trying not to take it personally but I keep thinking do they mean me or my bump?

DH (is that right, I'm new to all this) luckily thinks bumps is wonderful and sexy and is v.proud.

HazieDazieandBaby · 01/06/2008 01:09

Argh! This never fails to annoy me - ask my DH who has to constantly put up with me moaning about it! Why do people feel it's okay to say stuff like this to you? I'm constantly told how big my bump is, but at a recent scan the baby measured exactly right for dates. As a few people have already said, it depends on your size before pregnancy, water retention, etc. I would say to you not to worry about it and just ignore the people that tell you that your bump is big, but then I would be a hypocrite!

eidsvold · 01/06/2008 03:01

huge with dd2 - 9lb 7oz. About the same size with dd3 - 8lb 4oz.

MarsLady · 01/06/2008 03:07

I always measured 7 weeks ahead of myself with the singletons and the DTs. My biggest baby was 8lbs 9 and my smallest 4lbs 5 alongside her 5lbs 14 brother. So no, big bump doesn't necessarily mean big baby (or twins)

Izzywhizzy · 01/06/2008 06:24

I was huge with my dd. People used to ask if it was twins all the time and a nurse asked me at about 30 weeks: 'Has anyone talked to you yet about how big you are?'.

I was really worried and kept asking about it at my check ups. The midwifes kept reassuring me that I was within the normal range, that my babe would probably be around the 8lb mark, etc, etc.

Well, she actually turned out to be almost 10lbs and I had to have a c-section after a day and half trying to get her out the conventional route.

So although I;d agree that big bump doesn't always equal big baby, it did in my case. BTW I'm pregnant at the moment with #2 and am huge again. I don't think I'm going to even bother with 'newborn' size babygros this time.

beaufies · 01/06/2008 21:55

I'm only 19 weeks but have a '6 month' bump, with frequent 'twin' comments and all relevant side effects.

I had a scan with an obstetrician last week and he explained that I am carrying a big baby (2 weeks ahead of dates but dates are certain) and that as my pre pregancy BMI was only 19 that there is nowhere for baby to hide so hence the big bump.

It remains to be seen whether the growth rate is maintained for me and for baby but as he's coming out of the sunroof I hope he's as big and strong as possible

keevamum · 01/06/2008 21:58

Nope I had no discernible bump when 9 months pregnant. I had to be scanned weekly as they were concerned and said I would be having a small baby. She was 8lb 13oz. So not always the case.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 01/06/2008 22:39

I think it depends a lot on your body shape and how much fluid is in there. MY ds bump was very big, he was 8lb 5 at 41+ so not huge, small bump with dd she was 6lb14 at 39 weeks- not a lot in it, but I didn't have as much fluid with DD - it was one of those things the mw tried to flap about, but whenever they checked it was aways just right.
She was very tangled up when they opened me up for my section, though.
I have a long body and narrow waist- I have long oval bumps- some people's bump push out very far forward which prolly makes them look bigger.

Daft comments of this ilk are the stuff of pg,unfortunately.

pigleychez · 02/06/2008 11:42

My 21 week scan shows baby has a big head and long legs.

Im now 34 weeks and the midwife says the baby feels big when she feels my tummy but the fundal height measurements seem right. I know i dont have alot of fluid so think bump is pure baby!
I feel every movement baby makes and can be pretty uncomfortable! The heads down and can feel the bottom right up high at the top of my bump and feet stick out on m right side.
Def think this is going to be a tall child.

BlueDragonfly · 02/06/2008 11:43

i had a MAHOOSIVE bump with ds3. could feel every small movement (once my placenta shifted!)

he was born at 38 weeks - 6lb 11 !! a hell of a lot of water though!

LouCCull · 19/06/2008 12:32

Ahhh I am loving this link!

I am fed up already and am only 19 weeks! I started showing at 15 weeks and the bump hasn't grown much since but just got a little more rounded.

Some days I feel bloated (like you do on the odd day when not pg) and some days feel small and light! I have only put on about 6lbs which I am very proud of as have had no sickness and no loss of appetite, have had a holiday (normally put on about half a stone on hol with all the booze!!) and am really pleased. Some days depending on clothes I wear I look bigger than others but think I am pretty average in size (i.e bump not restricting me at all!) only just in maternity clothes for comfort more than fit and starting to like having a little bump. Coz I think it takes a bit of getting used to.

Some people think I am small and say oh blimey you are small - but it will come (which is a pretty ok/nice comment) but today I had the "god you are really popping out now, are you sure your dates aren't wrong" I could have killed her!

its like

  1. who cares?
  2. I am approaching 5 months
  3. you feel a bit crap anyway with changes especially as first time baby!
  4. Duh - I am pregnant!!!!its meant to grow!

I don't react and am very polite as am paranoid people will think I am mad and hormonal (which i prob am! ) but inside my blood is boiling.

I don't know if baby is big or small and I don't care to be honest as long as its ok.

Glad we all feel the same!

xx

muckle bump = 9lb3oz baby here

MrsMattie · 19/06/2008 12:34

Big bump doesn't always mean big baby, although in my case it did! Everyone said I looked like I was carrying twins; gave birth to 10 lb monster boy!

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 12:40

No it doesn't. It just does't make sense really. I had a big bump, and although I also had a big baby, he didn't weigh the whole 5 stone I put on in pregnancy. The shape and size of bump has to do with your body shape, your diet, yes the baby, but also the placenta, the water and god knows what else!
Has the mw told you how big she thinks baby will be?
