++500 glucose In urine

Evening!

I home urine test a few times a week due to pre eclampsia in previous pregnancy. This evening I have a reading of ++500 glucose. I have had sugar in urine before on tests. But never that high.

do you think this is a call triage tonight one, or just wait for my midwife app next Thursday?

27+4 weeks pregnant

Have you had a GTT this pregnancy? I'd leave a message for your community midwife, asking if they think you need one arranging urgently. If it's difficult to get hold of a community midwife then ring triage

Thank you for coming back to me 😀

no GTT yet, and there has been no mention of it. My community midwife never replies to messages, but I am booked in next week for the usual app. Unsure if i should wait till then.

I hate bothering triage 🙈

As someone who’s had gestational diabetes twice, please don’t ignore this. It won’t have been mentioned cos you probably don’t meet the criteria for testing, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get it. It really fucks me off as I think all pregnant women should be tested for it! It’s important that you know if you have it so you can treat it. Untreated GD can have really negative effects.

Have you had your 28 week midwife appt yet? This is usually when the GTT is done for those who meet the criteria.

Thank you, it hasn’t been mentioned yet but I do have a midwife appointment next week where I will be mentioning it and showing pictures of the tests.

I think I will hold off till that appointment rather than call triage. I’m not even sure what the criteria is for the test but I have hit ++500 a few occasions now, I am weeing an unbelievable amount and so thirsty. I put this down to the heat, then needing the toilet after all the water!

I would actually call triage, they may want you tested sooner. You need two appointments two hours apart so mentioning it at your midwife appointment would only delay it.

i didn’t even have any symptoms but i still had it. If you’re having symptoms already you could have crazy high sugars.

check if your triage team can put you onto the diabetes midwife. My diabetes midwife used to man the phones on triage sometimes, your hospital might have the same. They won’t make you come into hospital for a GTT but might be able to organise for you to have it at your midwife appt. I’d be surprised if it’s anymore than a phone call to triage personally, you shouldn’t be afraid to contact them, that’s what they’re there for!

ok, that makes complete sense. I wasn’t aware how the test was done, so like you said it’s 100% worth calling them as they can get the apps set up.

Do you happen to know what your readings were on the urine tests? I have had a hand full of raised levels. I didn’t test for a week as I was away and today’s tests have all shown ++500, which google is telling me is bloody high 🫣

Are you in the UK? A GTT (glucose tolerance test) is a fasting blood test, then drink a glucose drink, then a second blood test 2 hours later. It’s not done via urine in my experience.

if you do have GD then I would highly reccomend Gestational Diabetes UK, both the website and their Facebook support group. NHS advice is shit!

Lavenderandlemons · 21/05/2025 21:21

It doesn't matter the number you're getting on the dipstick, any glucose needs to be looked at further. If it's just a trace you can repeat, but anything more you should be tested for GD. You've mentioned having more than one reading the same, so that's criteria enough. Plus you have the tell tale symptoms of GD (increased urination and thirst). Ring triage, it will be a quick phone call and they can book you in for the test. If you wait a week then it will could be another week after that before you get an appointment so I wouldn't delay .

Thank you, I am going to call them in the morning. I have had multiple trace, a few of 100 and now a ++500 test

I certainly don’t want to delay anything. I just wasn’t sure how urgent it was to be looked at.

Yes I am UK. I am using home testing kits for proteins, but I’ve noticed the raised glucose. Tonight’s was very high.

triage call first thing in the AM

Hello! You should have been offered a GTT around 26-27 weeks. And this should have been booked in advance at your previous midwife appointment. It sounds like it's clearly been missed by your midwife and I would call your midwife clinic/number to book it in ASAP.
All the best!

LolaJ87 · 22/05/2025 12:54

How did you get on @Whototalkto1? I am on my second GD pregnancy and have never had glucose in my urine so it sounds very urgent and I hope you've been seen this morning.

@MK0411 not everyone gets a GTT, only those classed at higher risk of GD. I think it should be everyone tbh, it's often missed otherwise.

Whototalkto1 · 22/05/2025 19:08

update

I managed to get hold of my community midwife, she didn’t seem concerned in the slightest, said glucose in wee wouldn’t trigger a GD test. She also said I don’t meet any of the criteria of getting GD, so they wouldn’t automatically test me.

she also said I shouldn’t be testing my urine for proteins, even though previous midwives have said it’s fine and any sign of a trace to call triage. I will be continuing the dip tests for my own peace of mind.

I am feeling a little let down, and I will be raising the issue with the other midwife at my appointment next week.

That’s a shame OP, she sounds incompetent.

please don’t let them fob you off, untreated GD is dangerous!

I would call the hospital switchboard and ask to speak to the diabetes midwives and share your concerns.

is there anyway you could get hold of a blood glucose monitor? Do you know any diabetics? You test your sugars 1 hour after a meal and it needs to be under 7.8.

Where2GoNext · 22/05/2025 19:22

I would try triage. You describe having symptoms of GD (extreme thirst, going to the toilet a lot) plus multiple episodes of 2+ glucose would definitely be enough for a GTT in my Trust.

I'm 32 weeks now on my second pregancy. Both times classed as low risk pregnancy. No history of GD either, but I my midwife booked me for an OGTT at 27wks. I assumed it was something that was offered to all as standard practice.

That is a wild and imo dangerous response from your midwife. I work in Ireland and you'd be brought in within 2 days for a GTT where I am. Of course it could be nothing to worry about, but it's a classic symptom so it very well could be GD.

I work with someone with diabetes, I will message her and ask if she has a glucose monitor! I can check after breakfast and dinner tomorrow 👍🏻

I am feeling the same.. Shocked at how dismissive she was.. almost felt like she told me off for hone urine testing and just said I was clearly anxious

Sorry you haven’t had a good response OP. If it helps, I have also had glucose in my urine and am a few weeks ahead of you, but I was already booked for the glucose tolerance test (which was thankfully negative). I’d push for a test for reassurance!

disappointedfox · 22/05/2025 21:16

Have you eaten sugar or carbs today? I always have glucose in my urine and have had a gtt and dont have gd. Ive been told it's really common to have glucose in urine if you eat a lot of sugar or carby foods and my midwife isnt concerned. I had to repeat a urine test last week because glucose was present and i was just told to retake it a few days later. But if you feel you cant contact your midwife or you feel urgently unwell call triage.

Hahaha I do every day, I actually eat very well but it always includes carbs and sugar.

I am going to push for a test just incase!

I did meet criteria for gd (family history of t2). But it wasn't till 28 weeks, at my midwife appointments between 12 and 20 weeks, i asked twice for it to be bought forward due to excessive thirst, needing to wee and energy crashes after meals, a few of my urine samples came back a bit raised but nothing major. I was declined it being bought forward and at 28 weeks the gd testing confirmed I had gd. My mw otherwise been great but wish she referred me earlier as by time I found out baby was huge. (And also my energy crashes have reduced now i know the carby culprit)

Im annoyed at your behalf the gd testing process isn't exactly rigorous or costly to nhs. You just sit in a room with a bunch of other women for 2 hours have a glucose drink and compare before and after bloods. Can't understand any red tape around it.

I second ringing the gd nurses line and trying to bypass midwife on this.
