What IS morning sickness? What causes it and why does it stop at around 12 weeks?

If its hormone related I don't see why it would stop IYKWIM,

Still got it terribly bad and am feeling very fed up

not technical terms but its the surge of particular hormones when you first become pg that you either get used to or they subside further in??..am i wrong?, feel free to put me right, its just what i was told

Tinkerisdead · 20/05/2008 11:48

isnt it because at around 12 weeks the placenta takes over the hormone production and your less sick?

gem1981 · 20/05/2008 12:23

I have the same thing about the placenta too

gem1981 · 20/05/2008 12:24

sorry that is meant to read

"I have heard the same thing about the placenta too"

hedgehog1979 · 20/05/2008 13:04

Sorry to be a pain but it doesn't always stop at 12 weeks, I am currently 36 weeks and have what DH refers to as pregnancy sickness and have had it from 6 weeks.
I have been told that whether you are sick or not depends on the amount of HCG in your system but do not know anything about the placenta.

TheProvincialLady · 20/05/2008 13:07

It's retribution for having sex, and is caused by eating anything that isn't boiled plain pasta. Not hormone related at all (it's a myth).

Honest

I have a feeling that it is placenta based for many women, but for some just all the extra hormones send their systems tits up, hence the continual sickness and hyperemesis in some women (including me).

I am intrigued to know if other women who have full pregnancy sickness have problems taking the pill too (I could only take it at night or I felt too nauseous to do much during the day)

misdee · 20/05/2008 13:19

it doesnt stop at 12 weeks for me i thought it had but then spent three days puking

lollipopmother · 20/05/2008 13:59

Didn't stop at 12 weeks for me either, but I think part of it was due to the position of the baby, I couldn't eat more than 1/4 of a plate of food without throwing it all up because I was too full rather than because I felt ill. That hasn't happened for at least a week now, and my heartburn/indigestion/reflux all went as well, I think the baby may have moved a bit. (I'm now nearly 25 weeks).

lollipopmother · 20/05/2008 14:00

Oh, and I used to feel really nausious when taking a certain brand of pill - Microgynon made me really rank, I changed the amount of hormones in it to less eastrogen and that made it better.

Miggsie · 20/05/2008 14:03

and how come you don't always get it for all your pregancies????

bikerunski · 21/05/2008 18:54

Oooh, FLame I hadn't made that connection, but of course. I hated the Pill, tried 3 or 4 brands and then gave up. This is my first pg and was hospitalised with hyperemisis. Maybe I am allergic to hormones?

finallypregnant · 21/05/2008 19:26

I had morning sickness from 8-25 weeks.

fizzledizzle · 21/05/2008 19:29

i had morning sickness the whole way through with both my ds.and surely calling morning sickness when you are sick all day is a little cruel as well

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 21/05/2008 19:42

It's worse in the mornings because your blood sugar is low, hence the advice to eat crackers before getting up, althout I found I just threw up crackers! Blood sugar can drop at any time in the day though, coupled with a sensitive nose makes it often all day sickness!
