Glucose in urine at 36W - is this likely to be late onset GD?

I've had a routine midwife appointment this week and my urine dip test was positive for glucose. It's been negative the rest of my pregnancy. As I'm too late for the full GD testing, they've run a blood test for diabetes, which will apparently take a week to come back. However I've also been told not to worry and to carry on as normal with regards to diet. So it feels like quite mixed messaging.

I'm asking for feedback for anyone who's had the following experiences:

Those who have had a positive glucose result and it not be related to GD - if so, was any further information given about the potential causes? As I asked my midwife and she said she didn't know what else causes glucose in urine.

Those who tested positive for GD when pretty much full term - what treatment/adjustments did you have to make in the final weeks of pregnancy, and what outcomes did you have in terms of your birth experience and your baby's health after birth?

I honestly can't decide if I should be worried, or just forget about it and carry on as normal! So thanks in advance for any experiences people can share.

I've literally just been diagnosed today at 32 weeks. I have to do my blood sugars 4 times a day, stop eating cakes, sweets and fizzy pop. They've said to swap my white bread, pasta and rice to wholemeal/brown. They've said when baby is born they'll have to test his blood sugars for 24 hours.

I have to do blood sugars over the weekend and they've gonna decide if I need Metformin on Monday.

I was retested because baby is on 97th percentile, not because of sugar in urine tho.

I'm honestly not too concerned they've put my mind at rest, just another thing to deal with isn't it x

Thanks for sharing your experience @MyPinkFish. By the time I get the results of the test, the baby could be here or close to being here, so I guess it's only a very short period of time that I'll need to make adjustments for if it is positive!

The kidneys ‘leak’ more glucose than normal during pregnancy, so for any level of blood sugar there will be more in the urine than in a non-pregnant woman. I had glucose in my urine on and off through all three pregnancies, but blood tests were always normal. I wouldn’t worry until you actually have a diagnosis.

@AppropriateAdult this is good to know, and I'm surprised my midwife didn't mention this when I asked if there could be any other causes besides GD. I've just done some online research and this explanation came up pretty much straight away. Maybe she just didn't want to get my hopes up!

I had glucose in urine once during pregnancy- around 36 weeks, it was the week before Christmas so my diet wasn’t exactly healthy! I cut down on sugar and the week after all was fine again, and stayed normal until I gave birth. My midwife said it wasn’t a concern if it was a one off

Had you done any exercise before taking the urine sample? This can actually cause glucose to show up on the dip test, according to the midwife I saw during pregnancy (this happened to me)

No I'd been at work all day. I do have an active job though in which I spend most of the day standing or walking so that may count as exercise at 36 weeks pregnant!
