16 weeks gender scan

Hi all, I’ve had my private gender scan at 16w3d and they said it was a girl. I literally can’t decipher the image at all so I’m worried they’ve gotten it wrong.
Can anyone tell me what they see/ confirm baby girl?
has anyone had the gender turn out to be different at their 20 week scan? We really wanted a baby girl and I’m so worried it’ll be wrong!

I’m assuming they had a good look at the scan and didn’t just go by this photo. What did they actually say? Were they confident? They should have told you if there was any degree of doubt

Surreymama25 · 15/05/2025 18:51

We did a reveal so the screen was off when they were checking the gender. Baby was fast asleep and I tried all sorts to get her to move. Ended up having to leave and come back and she was finally moving a bit then. I asked him when the screen was off if he had seen it and he said yes and I said are you sure and he said 99% sure.

The trained sonographers are most likely better at deciphering the images than Mumsnet posters, OP.
99 percent sure is all you're going to get unless you get a DNA test. Things can always turn out differently.

And honestly, saying you're worried they're wrong is like saying you'll be disappointed with a boy. Which I think is pretty low. 😔 Hope you have a healthy baby.

AliBaliBee1234 · 15/05/2025 19:13

I know someone who was told girl at 16 weeks then boy at 20. So yes it happens. Studies have found they are less accurate than 99%.

I hope it is right though since you being so worried about having a boy is quite sad 🙄

Gender disappointment is real.
Also she did not at all say she was worried it was a boy, just that worried what she has been told could be wrong as she was wanting a girl.
Just like if somebody said you were getting your favourite chocolate cake but then ended up with vanilla.

In the picture op, the sex isn't shown I believe. I think head is the lower left of the picture (with a dark spot being the brain) and legs at the top right.
It's in profile.

Without seeing the potty shot it would be impossible for anybody to give their opinion, however that being said, the sonographer will be working on that machine and looking at multiple babies every single day. They will know best. The only reason it would be fasle if baby has a very swollen vulva or a small penis as 16 weeks can still be tricky to see especially if baby was in a tricky position.

TheIceBear · 15/05/2025 20:36

So Sick of these posts. Always seems to be someone who is “worried” they aren’t actually having a girl. People on the internet aren’t going to know more from a couple of photos than a trained person doing a scan.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/05/2025 20:40

Perhaps it would have been better to wait until 20 weeks.

MovingBird123 · 15/05/2025 20:57

At my 20 week scan I was told "it's probably a girl, but sometimes boys are good at hiding their bits". In the end I did have a girl.

ScMTB · 15/05/2025 21:06

My midwifes advice was at 16 weeks if you choose to have a private scan and are told boy, you can take it as pretty much certain. But if told girl take it with a pinch of salt as mistakes are often made with girls and she has had many cases where those who have been told girls are then told boy at 20 weeks.

I'd wait until 20 weeks for a second opinion.

Sorry i disagree. You shouldn't choose to have a child whilst having such a strong gender preference. It's become way too normalised.

I’m allowed to feel whatever I want about MY baby and after already losing two girls, yes I will be disappointed if this turns out to be a boy after being told it was a girl. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The ultrasound place said the gender is shown directly under the G in girl.
I think because it was a surprise and they didn’t talk it through to us whilst we were in the scan I’m having a hard time believing it.

You've left your name, DOB and all other details on here.

i think you need some support for your anxiety/feelings around this
I’m sure you’ve posted several times with a picture and asking for help - no one on the internet can help with deciphering a picture (a sonographer is the expert)
you need to unpack your feelings about your gender disappointment

I also lost a girl and then had a boy. He's wonderful.

No 16 week scan is 100% and I don't see anything clear in this photo. I'd wait until 20 weeks to confirm and in the meantime work through your feelings about this.

Are you just anxious in general because of your losses?

What an odd thing to say to someone who has lost two children.

in what way is it odd? I've also lost two girls and completely agree

Here is an article about how the sonographers know the gender. It’s not 100% accurate. You’ll know for sure once baby is born. However at my 16 week’s scan I did not have a clue from looking at the screen if it’s a girl or a boy, however the sonographer said it’s a girl and it was a girl. I think they’ve done something to check where umbilical cord was on the scan. Your scan photo is not very clear, however I wouldn’t be able to tell what is what from the scan I’ve got 🤣

TheGreenCrab · 17/05/2025 18:58

I’m so sorry to hear of your losses xx

When you have the 20 week scan I would ask the sonographer to show you the three lines so you can see why they think girl ☺️
