My DD is only 1 so everything is very recent. I’m just thinking what I can use for my second which will be due in January. I was thinking can I reuse:

Moses basket -used for 4 months. some places say get a new mattress some say the old ones fine?

next2me crib - very used for a whole 9 months (I know I used it too long) same does it need a new mattress or is the one I have ok?

car seat - don’t drive so it’s only been used a handful of times, never been in an accident etc

Car seat you can definitely reuse

I'd maybe get a replacement mattress for the next to me.

I'd probably use the existing mattress in the moses basket

TomeTome · 14/05/2025 19:44

Everything

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 14/05/2025 19:46

As already said. Reuse everything.

Zellie1027 · 14/05/2025 19:46

Car seat will be fine so long as it’s been stored ok (we stored ours and I cleaned everything except the head support which couldn’t be removed and it had a few mould spots on it so had to be chucked which was a shame!).

I didn’t change the mattress for our next to me crib. It didn’t seem necessary to me but appreciate others may feel differently.

Needspaceforlego · 14/05/2025 19:48

Car seat will be fine.
But I'd replace both mattresses.

tripleginandtonic · 14/05/2025 19:49

I washed the moses basket mattress for all of mine.

Happymchappyface · 14/05/2025 19:49

Everything. I’m sure I read that between siblings it’s fine to reuse mattresses ….

ButIDontLikePeas · 14/05/2025 19:50

Def reuse car seat unless it gets mouldy in wherever you store it.

We reused moses basket and next2me but bought new mattresses for both. That's also Lullaby Trust advice now.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/05/2025 19:50

I'd reuse. DD had hardly anything new for the first six months, except gifts. I bought pink socks so people had a clue she was a girl 😀

chateo · 14/05/2025 19:50

Everything, I reused all that stuff and it’s been 6 years. I did get replacement mattresses though.

CoolCapybara · 14/05/2025 20:14

Everything. I've kept everything and not even sure if I'm having another yet or not lol

tortiecat · 14/05/2025 20:14

Fine to reuse everything, assuming clean and in good condition.

eyeswide21 · 14/05/2025 20:27

I'm about to have another and will be reusing everything. Reusing between siblings is considered fine if the items have been stored correctly

Meeting · 14/05/2025 20:44

I'd reuse everything and wouldn't replace the mattresses unless they look like they need it.

Sofiewoo · 14/05/2025 20:46

There is really no need to send a lightly used mattress to landfill because it’s been used for 4 months!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 14/05/2025 20:47

I'd reuse everything and wouldnt replace the mattresses unless they were heavily stained or damaged.

WithOneLook · 14/05/2025 21:01

I replaced the mattress in the carry cot but you could see where DD had laid in it. I replaced the big cot mattress too but it had been used for just over 2 years by that point. I didn't use an infant carrier but would have reused it if I had (assuming no accidents etc). So DS had a new car seat on account of the fact DD was still using hers!

Congratulations on the new addition!

HiCandles · 14/05/2025 21:03

I reused everything. I read the risk with used mattresses relates to mould growth, so if you've no idea how it's been stored, messes on it, cleaning etc, that can be dangerous. However when it's been you that used it, with a decent mattress protector, cleaned it and dried it when needed, and you're therefore confident there won't be any mould spores hiding in there, it's absolutely fine.

BertieBotts · 17/05/2025 15:58

It's fine to reuse a car seat, the only problem with any of this stuff would be if it's gone mouldy, because that can't usually be cleaned well enough to protect babies.

You should dispose of a car seat if it's been in an accident or it's more than 10 years old or if any parts get broken/lost.

Lullaby Trust no longer advise you need a new mattress - they've not said that for a good ~7 years now at least.

Lullaby Trust website still states the following:

Some research has found a higher risk of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress from outside the family home, although the link hasn’t been proven. Generally speaking, we recommend buying a new mattress for each baby, although we know this isn’t always possible.

The last line is also repeated in the FAQs further down.

It's hard to know which baby mattress and baby  bedding to buy. Which is safest? Does it reduce the risk of SIDS? Here you’ll find...

you could check your mattress against the lullaby trust checklist OP

cherrycola66 · 17/05/2025 20:01

Thankyou everyone. I have just come to the realisation that I actually stored everything in the loft, I did put black bags over everything but I will have to get them down at some point to check if they’re even useable xx

That is talking about second hand from another family, which means handing down to a sibling is fine, and they also say the link wasn't actually proven, which basically means it's unlikely to even be a risk in the first place.
