Ive just had my 20 week scan this morning and the baby is totally fine except for there being 5mm of fluid on her kidneys.. the sonographer reassured this was completely normal and alot of babies get this and it tends to clear itself up and you just have to come back for a scan at 34 weeks to check it has, and even in the worst case where it hasnt the baby just has to be checked for urinary tract infections once born.

Has anyone else had this??

I was ok this morning but now iv started to worry as i googled it and there was a mention it was a possible marker for downs. Had my downs results back the other week and i have a 1 in 4,400 chance so pretty low but im still worried about it

my dd had this and i too was very worried about downs, i rang my mw and she explained that although it is a marker for downs, the babies also have other markers which would've shown up on the scan, not just the one. i had another scan at 34 weeks which showed they was still fluid. The doctor said she would need antibiotics and a scan after birth but when she was born they didn't do anything, just said to make sure she is weeing properly, she is now 15 months and we've had no problems so far! good luck with your pregnancy and enjoy!!

Some of my children had this too! majority of cases clear themselves. Mine all had anti-biotics from birth and regular scans. It was diagnosed as kidney reflux. DS2 had an op at Guys just before he turned 2.

Really quite common and as i said i think 9 out of 10 cases do just clear themsleves.

Other markers would have shown up if their was a risk of downs, i am sure the sonographer would have had a good look round.

I had the same thing at my 20 weeks scan. Like you I was quite worried as I wasn't told much so I was fretting a lot. I had a repeat scan at 32 weeks and the measurements were fine. Try not to worry to much about it, it might clear. It might be something but then again, the baby might just need to do a wee.

Good luck in any events, I know it is very stressful.

I had the same news last week, at 22. I suggest you don't go around reading stories on the internet as you get even more worried, as I did. My gynaecologist told me it occurs especially to boys and it normally clears up by itself, if it doesn't and the baby is born, the baby has to be checked regularly. I have my next scan at 28, I hope everything will be gone by then!
Good luck!

thanks for the advice..

the sonographer at the hospital didnt even mention it was a small marker for downs, she just said its common and usually clears up but even if it doesnt its not a big problem anyway.
She did check for all the other 'things' and everything was totally normal. Dont have my scan until 34 weeks which is end of august when they check again but it seems like rather along time!

I had this as well on my 20 week scan. Came home, read all sorts on the Internet and scared myself silly for no reason! Absolutely fine, no problems with LO was when born at all. They also couldn't find one of her heart outlets at the 20 wks scan either, I came over all hormonal and started nearly crying .. oh dear!

Everything was fine though so I would try not to worry if I was you, easier said then done I know.

Ledodgy · 20/05/2008 20:51

I had the same with ds1 it was found at my 20 week scan so they gave me a detailed scan te following week and it was still dilated. I was re scanned at 30 weeks and tey ad gone back to normal but they still scanned ds at 6 weeks to make sure. I was worried about downs and had am amnio not a descision I would make now but anyways he was fine. It turns out my hospital was part of a group who are obliged to tell you that it is a possible soft marker but said that if I had had the same scan in Leeds nothing would have been mentioned. If the kidneys are still dilated after the birth it usually means a low dose antibiotic until the child is 3 or 4 to stop urine infections the worst case senario is a small routine operation to make the tubes a bit bigger but this is nothing to worry about.

HelenCS · 20/05/2008 20:55

Ok..

so what your all saying is basically im worrying over nothing and the fact that everything else is completely normal and in the right place i shouldnt worry about it?!!

Yes that's right. Honestly I wasted so many weeks worrying about it that it ruined my pregnancy. Don't let that happen to you.

Diege · 20/05/2008 21:57

Ledodgy's right. I had it will all 3 dds at 20 weeks scan, and all were absolutely fine. Apparently our Trust doesn;t even bother reporting it now unless seen in conjunction with other factors, as research is now suggesting it's part of normal physiolgocial development for some babies . My first pregnany was also 'spoiled' unnecessarily by anxieties about this!
