I had extreme thirst at night, so I would drink two pints of water. Started around 32 weeks. Other than that I didn’t really have symptoms. I guess when I eat sweet food like chocolate brownies or something very rich in sugar I feel low/sluggish a few hours later but I have also had that on a few occasions outside of pregnancy. I got tested at 34+0 and it was positive, so then diet managed it from 35 to 39 weeks (birth).

Also ironically both people in the diebetes clinic said thirst wasn’t a GD symptom at night unless my blood sugar was being affected and it turned out my fasting blood sugar in the mornings was fine and in range. I was still convinced it was that. I had thirst at night with my first child too but was never tested for GD in that pregnancy, so I assumed it was normal in pregnancy from 32+ weeks, which it could be.

I didn't have any symptoms. Not helpful, sorry!

FancyCatSlave · 08/05/2025 10:56

Absolutely none. Symptoms aren’t that common really, it’s not like Type 2 but people seem to confuse the 2.

My (now ex) MIL especially who accused me of eating too much sugar! Mental bitch. It’s not caused by diet but can be managed with diet (I didn’t need medicating but was really strict on what I ate).

LolaJ87 · 08/05/2025 11:28

No symptoms here either.

Zeitumschaltung · 08/05/2025 11:32

No symptoms either

Mushroo · 08/05/2025 12:01

Also no symptoms

Teenybub · 08/05/2025 13:57

Probably a stupid question, if you didn’t have any symptoms, did you need to do anything to manage it?

Fleur405 · 08/05/2025 13:59

I also had no symptoms.

Yes, had to follow a GD diet and still struggled with fasting readings. I ended up on metformin at 36 weeks last time due to my fasting numbers, these are hormone controlled so diet can't really change them.

This time I've been on Metformin from 19 weeks, again for my fasting numbers, and I'm still struggling. Despite that, I've never had any signs or symptoms.

Thank you for the information. I’ve got my test next week and both parents are diabetic and my sibling had GD so I’m expecting it to be positive.

You never know, you might be lucky! But yeah, the odds were against me too and I wasn't at all surprised when I was diagnosed. I hope you're not too worried about it. It seems daunting but if you are diagnosed, you will manage it. Sounds like you'll have lots of family support too if needed!

None at all, it was sheer luck that I had to go back for another scan as baby wasnt showing everything then they noticed she was a bit too big.

Happyinarcon · 08/05/2025 14:15

No symptoms but I started to feel queasy after drinking the glucose drink they use to test. I get the same queasy sensation now 10 years later if I eat a heap of sweet stuff so I suspect I’m wading into diabetes territory again

wingingit1987 · 08/05/2025 14:18

I’m 26 weeks and just been diagnosed. Baby was measuring ahead which prompted the testing. I have had blurred vision, increased thirst, tiredness and dizziness. Ketones in urine also.

wingingit1987 · 08/05/2025 14:18

I’ll add- this is baby no.6 and first I have had it.

Yes, because my fasting blood sugar was extremely out of control. I had to up the insulin I was injecting several times a week. I delivered at 36 weeks and felt very ill the week before that (I was in hospital that week so not walking around, so the sugar was even more out of control). Still, at the moment of delivery, it was under control and the baby was fine.
