Accidentally ate nettle soup

Hi.

I had nettle soup this morning and didn't realise until after eating it's not advised in the first trimester as it can induce uterine contractions and cause a miscarriage, it doesn't say anywhere on the NHS list of foods that it's not safe to eat?!
I feel sick to my stomach worried I may have caused a miscarriage as I'm only 6 weeks.. does anyone know if there's any evidence it will as I can't find many sources on it?

Thanks. x

You'll be fine x

The concentration of nettles in a soup vs in a tea is soooo much smaller. Therefore your chances of "possible" issues arising evenpre minimal
Hope it was lovely soup!

I'm sure you'll be fine, just out of interest, what did you think you were eating x

SprinkleTheCat · 05/05/2025 17:53

My mum made it and brought some over I didn't know it had nettles in until I asked her what was in the soup as it was so lovely.
I haven't told anyone I'm pregnant yet so I'm sure she would be upset if she knew I wasn't supposed to be eating it.
Thank you for the reassurance I suppose I will have to wait and see what happens.

Hello there, I just made nettle and veg soup as my little boy was desperate to pick them and try it. I had no idea they weren’t safe. I have made myself sick as I googled it after thinking how healthy I had been and anticipating reading the benefits, and so realised very quickly. However I am only 5 weeks and, like you, now so worried. Was everything ok @SprinkleTheCat ? xx

@Esxx

Yes still pregnant 😊 I think there is a risk as it causes uterine contractions but that doesn't mean it will definitely cause a miscarriage.
Unfortunately there's not much research on it so no way of knowing, but I only ate the soup once.

Thanks so much for responding @SprinkleTheCat , really appreciate it and so glad to hear you’re alright. Hopefully I will be too. Hope all goes well for you in the rest of your pregnancy x
