Is my bump too big?

Hi, I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant and my bump is quite big already. I went to a baby shower today and someone said I look bigger than the mum to be whose baby shower it was and it’s playing on my mind. What have other people’s experiences been with their bump size at 15 weeks?

What exactly are you worried about OP? For what reason would your bump be too big? She just sounds insensitive. Id forget about it. Congrats!

Everybody's different.

user8636283907 · 03/05/2025 20:10

Do you have a picture so we can say yes or no?

Not that your size actually matters, but you are asking for our opinions here.

MrsPlantagenet · 03/05/2025 20:11

There is no standard. I had no bump whatsoever until 22 weeks, my friend (pregnant at exactly the same time) had a visible bump at 16 weeks.

I’m worried that I might be gaining too much weight! I was so happy my bump was showing until I went back to work this week and so many people have said how big it is already! Someone said am i sure it’s not twins

Please don't post a pic of your bump. Lots of weirdos on the internet!

Feliciacat · 03/05/2025 20:13

I’m 14 weeks and am not showing at all BUT I’ve been very unwell and have lost weight since getting pregnant. It’s also my first baby so I won’t show as early as someone who’s had children before. Plus I’m overweight so that decreases my likelihood of showing early.

I’d much rather be like you! You sound like you’re having a healthy pregnancy. That lady sounds rude to comment on your bump.

If you were gaining too much weight it would make you higher everywhere, not make your bump specifically bigger. Best way to know if you're putting on too much weight is to weigh yourself.

Yes that’s a good point, i’ll weigh myself in the morning and compare it to my first appointment weight

I think this is one to have a chat with your midwife about. They can tell you from far better experience about the range of typical bump sizes, and if you're gaining too much weight.

I recall reading somewhere that erm, younger fitter women with stronger abdominal muscles may not show as soon, because their muscles keep it in, but some people just have bigger torsos to fit the growing baby into.

Me, I was the blobby sort that needed looser trousers from 6 weeks... but I'd had my gall bladder out a month before I got pregnant, so my abdominal muscles were all to pieces anyways.

DaydreamingDogs · 03/05/2025 20:17

Have you been pregnant before? Second and subsequent pregnancies often show earlier. Every woman and pregnancy is different though. I had no bump til about 25 weeks with my first but had a small bump from about 12 weeks with my second. See your midwife if you’re concerned about you bump size or you think you’re gaining excessive weight.

Oh wow im so sorry to hear you’ve been unwell😔This is my first pregnancy too and it’s been pretty smooth sailing so far

But if you do this, please remember that weight gain in pregnancy is absolutely to be expected if only because of blood volume and amniotic fluid. Ten pounds of weight gain by 15 weeks is so normal. So whatever the scales say, try not to worry. As another person said, the midwives might be good to ask.

this is my first! My mum said she popped straight away when she was pregnant and then didn’t get any bigger until 3rd trimester but I do feel quite bloated and big

Yes i have an appointment at 16 weeks so ill definitely ask about it then! I’m in my early 20s and relatively fit so I did think I wouldn’t show this much this early!!

Thanks so much for your advice, I’ll definitely ask my midwife too

I had a big bump all the way through. I was huge at the end...I mean it was ridiculous. I had people asking me if I was sure it wasn't twins. But it runs in my family, my mum had huge pregnancy bellies with all of us as well. Then my daughter arrived a very average size! And what's even more confusing is that my stomach eventually went back to normal and I don't have a single stretch mark. Basically all of our bodies are different and do different things. Chat to your midwife if you're worried but I'm sure all is okay.

HallidayJones6779 · 03/05/2025 20:27

Congrats OP :)

My advice would be to enjoy your bump!!!! It goes too quickly and you'll have spent your time worrying about it, rather than loving yourself, enjoying wearing maternity clothes, feeling the kicks etc.

just know everyone is different and every pregnancy different too.

if anyone comments on your bump being too big - or too small - just remember it reflects more on them and their incredible rudeness, not you.

DejaMooo · 03/05/2025 20:37

I don’t know why people think they suddenly have the right to comment on your body when you’re pregnant. I’m 25 weeks and have been told my bump is small, my bump is big, I have a “wide” bump (erm thanks). In my first pregnancy I actually had a stranger tell me that I needed to go and get myself checked out after asking how far along I was, as my bump was way too small and there may be something wrong 😒
I’m sure you have a lovely bump, whatever the size - everybody is different!

And even worse, some people think they can just touch your stomach….like seriously, fuck off! 🤬😂

Groundhogday2025 · 03/05/2025 21:05

I had a big bump in my first pregnancy and I’m positively huge second time round. Despite being huge first time someone did still say I was small, someone else said I was big, blah blah blah. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry. People are just rude and I tell you this now, someone will always have something to say about everything you are or do as a parent. Your bump is too big, your bump is too small, you should have an unmedicated labour, you should have all the drugs, you should BF, you should FF, you should do purées, you should do baby led weaning…. It goes on and on and on and you just have to let it become like water off a duck’s back or you’ll go mad with everyone’s unwarranted opinions.

Rocknrollstar · 03/05/2025 21:20

I didn’t put on a lot of weight but my bump was very big. How tall are you? I am quite short and think that might have made the bump bigger.

I’ve weighed myself this morning and I’ve put on 4.5 pounds since my first midwife appointment, so that’s normal right? It’s only really my bump that’s got big I don’t seem to have got bigger anywhere else

I’m 5”4! I’ve put on 4.5 pounds and it’s only really my bump that’s grown

Oh yeah! I’m no medical expert but I’ve read online that 5-10 pounds is ideal by now. I said ten pounds in my first post just in case you’d put on a higher amount and would be worried about that. Five pounds is fine too :)
