Ok so people keep saying to me buy clothes in bigger sizes. Like pjs and pants (ok so i know they dont matter what they look like). But... i am 3 months pg but prob look around 5-6 months (im petite too) but its all good and well for larger ladies but if i wear anything too big i just look dumpy because it doesnt fit in hips/boobs etc!

so... if your a size 8 and petite like me what size do you generally wear during pg that doesnt look stupid??

I bought actual maternity clothes. If you're going to be buying clothes that wont fit you afterwards anyway, why buy normal clothes in a bigger size, why not buy maternity clothes that fit you properly? A few of the High Street stores now do maternity ranges and my local Mothercare window display has been looking really good for the last few weeks so I guess the choice these days is pretty good.

OracleInaCoracle · 18/05/2008 19:03

yep, actual maternity clothes here too. DP is good

mad4mybaby · 18/05/2008 19:04

i am wearing maternity clothes, have been since 8 weeks. Just wondering about other things. Like pjs. Dont want to buy maternity ones as i think expensive so looking on ebay but dont know what size to get!

I bought/am buying maternity clothes too Buy in a size 8 like normal but they are maternity range so fit around the bump but fit normally elsewhere.

So far have found H&M to be ok for petite pregnant size 8's.

PortAndLemon · 18/05/2008 19:05

If you are size 8 and pregnant you have a chance to actually look fab and glam and not like a whale. So forget the "buy clothes in bigger sizes" advice and buy proper maternity clothes.

Actually, for all except those who are lucky enough to expand in just the right way during pregnancy I would advise buying proper maternity clothes anyway. The fit is better and they don't ride up at the front so much.

sweetkitty · 18/05/2008 19:08

I have a mixture of clothes some maternity mostly size 10 as it's sometimes difficult to find size 8 maternity clothes. Also have some size 12 tops that you can get away with at least until the last few weeks. I have also been wearing some size 10 trousers with the top button undone as I only have 8 weeks to go and don't want to shell out anymore.

This pregnancy I have found New Look brilliant for cheap maternity clothes, got a pair of jeans for £12, not brill quality but for a few months they will do. Nice collection of tops as well.

CarGirl · 18/05/2008 19:11

I'm 5' a size 8, had huge babies, I never looked glam when pregnant I looked like a beached whale. Even the maternity stuff didn't fit well because my bump was too big. Best jeans I got were some under the bump ones that were a really skimpy fit (had to take them up a bit).

Sorry I can't be very positive!

mad4mybaby · 18/05/2008 19:15

yeah i had a huge bump with ds (normal weight though) so i understand!

So where can i get some shorts pjs? Ive ordered some of jojomamanbebe but the shorts nearly came down to my knees!! were horrible with big elastic waist. I want some under the bump that'l work me being small. Any ideas?

NO ideas at all! I had La Senza regular pjs (they seem to come up short normally) and the elastic and fabric just kept stretching and fitted me the whole way through!

Caz10 · 18/05/2008 19:23

i agree proper maternity clothes all the way, i liked new look, h&m, next and top shop, mainly all from ebay!

for cheap and comfy jim jams i went to primark, size 14/16, drawstring trousers and a halfway button up they were invaluable in hosp and for bf-ing too! (oh and they were £4!)

Essie3 · 18/05/2008 19:23

A mixture. I bought proper maternity trousers (in the sale at Blooming Marvellous) in size 8, and only now, with under 1 month to go, are they getting a bit tight on the hips.
Then for tops, I bought some cotton t-shirts dead cheaply from Tesco, again in size 8. They were all a bit longer than the tops I normally wear (to cover any gaps). And, they are now tight on my bump, and will stretch out of all shape but at £3 each, they're fine.

Just the other day, I bought pyjamas from asda, normal shorts and top ones, but in a size 14!!

I'm carrying small though.

sparklesandnowinefor5months · 18/05/2008 19:27

I'm size 8 and pg too, and like the other ladies i buy maternity clothes in same size as i find things gape(?) too much

Pj's - I don't wear them but why don't you buy a pair of cheap elasicated or drawstring jogging bottoms from peacocks/tesco in a size 10/12 and wear them with a maternity t-shirt, as you said it doesn't matter what it looks like!

As for knickers i bought some 'normal' cotton ones from next which are fab these and these - i bought them in a size 12 and they are very comfy!

CarGirl · 18/05/2008 19:30

I ended up buying hipster shorts in my last couple of pregnancies, stopped my thighs rubbing together at the end (August babies inc heatwave of 2003)

artichokes · 18/05/2008 19:31

Gap maternity nightwear is OK if you like a casual/comfy look

staranise · 18/05/2008 20:44

I'm normally size 8 and am 11 weeks with my third pg. At night I wear my normal pjs, which are either elastic/drawstring, or nightdresses, which tend to be empire line. In my last pg, I also bought some drawsting jogging bottomes and soem men's long wollen jumpers from Zara, which I use for around the house.

The shops are full of long smock-like dresses/tops at the moment (I saw some nice ones in Jigsaw, Primark, Next etc), which you can wear with maternity jeans and/or leggings. They're very useful after the birth too for hiding post-partum belly. I also bought some long maternity vests from TopShop which I wear under my normal tops to stretch the gap.

slinkiemalinki · 18/05/2008 20:45

Try the French brands - Seraphine and Formes. Also Isabella Oliver stuff goes down to a 0 (size 6). Echo what others have said - I never understand the advice to wear regular stuff a bit bigger - it just doesn't look right. I am an 8/10 normally but tend to take a 10 maternity (must be that scoffing in the early days...). Also Gap XS should fit if you are near one. I found the IO ruched tops excellent for showing I am bump and not lard! But it costs unfortunately.

slinkiemalinki · 18/05/2008 20:46

I got some nice Gap body empire line nighties in modal - size M had plenty of room (I am definitely not an 8 on top!)

wrinklytum · 18/05/2008 20:49

I went from 8 - 12 by end of pg.I bought a couple pairs maternity jeans and some vest tops from topshop.I also was lucky and found some mat.wear in charity shops as a fluke.

Poohbah · 18/05/2008 20:55

I got some mat jeans that were size 10 and short from Next, they were really good!

WombFor1More · 18/05/2008 22:28

I am a 6-8 and only 5"1 so know your dilema well!!

I have found next and h&m a godsend. I have 3 pairs of next petite jeans and a pair of combats. From H&M I have some gorgeous shorts, 2 tight fitting but very strechy vest tops, a denim skirt and a dress

Hope you have some luck soon

WombFor1More · 18/05/2008 22:28

Meant to add they are all maternity clothes not normal stuff in bigger sizes. That never worked too well lol!

fym · 19/05/2008 07:22

I had the same 1st time round.... and I was a 10/12... you just have to buy maternity clothes! I never managed the 'buy clothes in bigger sizes' thing. I even grew out of my maternity clothes at about 7 months. I have a short distance waist to bust which is why I was so big - bump measured accurately for dates! I just grew forward

QuintessentialShadows · 19/05/2008 07:39

For nightwear, I actually bougth Mothercare Breastfeeding nighties when I was pregnant, they were big, but I wasnt a tent, and I could use them after.

Ok, I did not look stylish, or glamourous, but I was comfortable, lol.

lollipopmother · 19/05/2008 09:37

Maternity clothes are the only thing I wear now, tops that are a couple of sizes bigger just look awful, whereas maternity wear looks great, it's cut to fit your bump. I always buy maternity clothes in the same size as I was before I got pregnant, all have fit perfectly.

tallbirduk · 19/05/2008 10:11

I am still wearing my 'ordingary' pyjama shorts as they are elasticated and sit nicely under my bump (maybe I am just lucky?), but I have bought a couple of nighties from Primark for my hospital bag.

Also, Sainsbury currently have vest tops (with buttons down the front) which are £3 each and are REALLY long - they are fab fab fab and I have bought a few of those (in my pre-pregnancy size - even though I am 35 weeks!!!)) both for knocking around in the sunshine and wearing to bed with shorts.

Also, although I do have maternity jeans and few tops, I also have a v. comfy pair of yoga trousers (with the roll up top) that I got from TK Maxx which aren't maternity but are fab (and cheaper than their maternity chums even though they are - as far as I can tell - identical), a few long t-shirts that are intended to be 'floaty' if you aren't sporting a bump but still fit nice if you are (just a bit more snug).
