hi, just wondering if anyone’s able to help. I went to triage just under two weeks ago as I had burning when I went to the toilet the first few times after getting out of the bath, but fine otherwise and no other symptoms - baby had also been a bit quiet so went to get checked. A urine sample was done when I got there which was fine but was sent of due to the burning urine and I got a call back today to say there is E. coli in my urine and I have a uti which I need antibiotics for, I also had my urine dipped at a midwife appointment three days before this and all was fine there too. I’m worried about the uti and anything else possibly being missed if all of my urine samples were fine first time. Is E. coli uti something I need to be concerned about as I’m really worried? I’ve also had a burning itchy feeling once or twice in the day the last two days which lasts a second or so unsure if this is related.
thanks in advance x

E.coli is a common bacteria to grow in urine and cause a UTI. Nothing too exciting to worry about but it does need treating with antibiotics. UTIs are common in pregnancy (and sometimes don't have traditional symptoms) which is why they test women constantly at this time. If your symptoms progress, for example you start to develop a temperature or feel shakey or have lower back pain then you need to seek further medical advice to rule out a worsening infection.

thanks for replying, is it worse that it’s been left for however long so far untreated as I’ve only just had a call back? I will start the antibiotics tomorrow. Thank you!

Just start (and fully finish) the antibiotics and you’ll be fine don’t worry x

Sorry, only just seeing your reply now. It shouldn't make any difference really, only if you had become sicker in the time between testing and getting treatment. Hope you're feeling okay today and have managed to get the antibiotics.
