(Non-chemical) Hair Dye When Pregnant

Hi all,

I’ve seen conflicting information around - can I use Directions hair dye on (just the ends, not my roots of) my hair? Just to be clear as well my hair is pre-lightened on the ends from bleach I used way back before I got pregnant so I wouldn’t be bleaching at all.

I know the Directions website says this: “It’s best to be on the safe side. Although all our colours are chemical-free, we do not recommend using any of our products while pregnant or breastfeeding.” But I suspect they may have written this because it hasn’t been tested and they have to err on the side of caution?

Has anyone else here used Directions hair dye when pregnant?

Can't speak for the brand you're referring to, but I've box dyed my hair all through pregnancy using both ammonia free and ammonia based dyes, and I'm currently 34 weeks with a healthy, active baby. And I do apply to my roots as I sadly have greys! Three friends had theirs professionally bleached throughout and all had normal pregnancies and are now mums to happy babies. Just pop the windows open and don't leave it on longer than instructed, you'll be perfectly fine.

I've not heard of directions before but, I've dyed my hair throughout both pregnancies and it's been fine

It’s completely fine to dye your hair when pregnant. It’s not fine for a hair dye manufacturer to describe themselves as chemical free. Which company is this?

I've used directions all through all of my pregnancies it's my go too. What colour you doing op?

I've been using directions for over 10 years also bleaching ect. All babies have been healthy. I didn't think about it tbh

Atarin · 30/04/2025 20:14

I’ve looked on the website, they don’t claim to be chemical free, I’m not sure where you are getting that from. It’s technically impossible!!!

When you’re pregnant you can sometimes experience skin sensitivity you haven’t had before. That’s why they put the disclaimer on. Just do a patch test on your elbow or behind your ear and leave for 48 hours to see if you get a reaction.

Thank you! This is the response I was looking for :) my hair is down to my hips and occasionally I stick a colour on the bottom few inches. I have Violet in my cupboard and it’s been calling my name!

I think it’s because they’re vegetable based? Or at least that’s how they were described aeons ago when I first started using them

I don't want to be mean but that sort of anecdotal evidence isn't very useful. It's like people saying my grandad smoked 40 fags a day and lived to 99 years old. Therefore smoking is totally fine.
There doesn't seem to be very much thorough scientific research on it. But there have been links between frequent use of hair dye especially amongst hairdressers and issues around stillbirth and asthma in children.
A lot of the evidence says it hasn't been properly studied so no one really knows.

What @Atarin means is that "chemical free" means absolutely nothing and shouldn't be on a box. Everything is made up of chemicals. Water is a chemical for example

Dairymilkisminging · 01/05/2025 07:33

I get what you mean but obviously we are not using hair dye at the same level as a hairdresser. Same as midwives with gas and air but that's OK while we are in labour. Putting dye on the end of her hair not even touching the skin will have absolutely no effect on baby.

I waited till my second trimester but got my hair bleached and toned. Went onto give birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl! I wouldn't worry too much about it it's very unlikely any chemicals will get to your baby from your scalp.
