Ice lollies while pregnant - Obsessed and husband is concerned

I am currently obsessed with ice lollies, it has to be the refresher 2 in 1 Pops (I get them from B&M) I have 2-3 a day, I could have more but I try not to just in case. I am 29 weeks pregnant and my husband is a little concerned at the amount of sugar and chemicals in the them and it affecting the baby, more so that I am currently being tested for potential GD. Do you think 2-3 a day is excessive? if so, I will cut back 100%, if not then I will continue 😂 not really sure how much this would affect me and/ or baby.

i think the bm ones have no sugar so fine but if your craving sweet fruity, your body maybe craving some vitamins .How about trying orange juice lollies

when i was pregnant i used to crave pancakes with maple syrup and bananas haha

user101101 · 28/04/2025 22:04

Make your own real juice ones??

diggermama · 28/04/2025 22:18

Water made me feel sick during my first pregnancy. Drinking it. Seeing it. Even the thought of drinking it, bleurgh. So I lived on ice pops! It’s all I wanted, and the only way I stayed hydrated. I have a happy, healthy 8 year old.

Satisfiedkitty · 28/04/2025 22:21

I started with ice pops, and then moved into ice cubes. I carried a flask of them around with me, even when I was in labour. Craving stopped as soon dc was born.

Could you try an ice cube, see if it helps? Frozen grapes were heaven as well.

This brings back memories of when I craved lemonade ice lollies when pregnant with my second child and got through rather a lot! R-whites in particular (they changed the shape and recipe not long after). She is my best sleeper, best eater and just an awesome person at 9 years old, so although just one anecdote, hopefully it can put your mind at rest a bit!

Orange juice will have much more of a sugar spike than a sugar free one, which if she does have or is borderline GD wouldn't be healthier. Diluted OJ or any juice would be better than pure juice frozen. Or frozen fruit slices.

I absolutely craved ice when I was pregnant, I was anaemic. Are your iron levels ok? Mind you I also had hyperemesis in both pregnancy and all I wanted to eat was Frazzles and sour patch kids with baby 1 and then frazzles again but also fresh pineapple (to the point I made my mouth sore repeatedly)and chow mein noodles with baby 2. Both are totally fine! Not even a hint of bacon smell

wobblyweasel · 28/04/2025 22:28

I had a cravings for orange ice lollies with my firstborn. I found no sugar ones, and would happily go through about 8 a day.

Nightmanagerfan · 28/04/2025 22:29

I had the same! Ate so many calipos! I tried to limit it too but it was a heatwave and hard to stop when I had a box in the freezer. The craving left as soon as I’d given birth. I think some of it was down to dehydration!
I can’t see how it would impact the baby.

21 years ago I was warned I was headed for GD as I was eating 3 Jubblies a day - Dd2 - it was a hot summer and she was born in July!

I went for ice cubes but they are not the same

shes fine though

sheree22 · 28/04/2025 22:36

Like the pp I craved ice and was anaemic, so it might be worthwhile getting checked. All I wanted was lime callipos!

Cerialkiller · 28/04/2025 22:37

I'm surprised that everyone is recommending sugar free ice lollies as healthier, they are full of sweetener and not good for you. That can often cause an insulin spike even without a blood sugar increase as your body anticipates sugar.

Wizz up some fresh berries and freeze those. Lower in sugar and higher in fiber and vitamins compared to other frozen juices. Add natural yoghurt for frozen smoothies!

jolies1 · 28/04/2025 22:41

I once went to three shops to find refresher sweets - I hadn’t hand them in years but had such a craving! I also ate a packet of fizzy strawberry laces a day for weeks and now can’t stand the smell of them. Pregnancy is weird. Try and cut back to one a day and ensure the rest of your diet is healthy.

Ponderingwindow · 28/04/2025 22:46

I had hyperemesis in pregnancy. If I could keep it down, it was good food.

I would ask your care provider about a quick anaemia check though. Whenever I start craving ice lollies or other icy treats, I know I need to up my iron intake.

TheLette · 28/04/2025 22:46

I craved ice during my second pregnancy, but was not anaemic. I had great iron levels. Just saying in case anyone reading this in future freaks out about potential anaemia. I really miss the joy of crunching on an ice cube!

justasking111 · 28/04/2025 22:51

I went mad for satsumas and strawberry jam. I was so sick in the first pregnancy but managed those plus Jacobs cream crackers and mugs of tea. Baby was fine when born.

MissBattleaxe · 28/04/2025 22:56

Your husband is over reacting and needs to stop reading the labels. As you can see from this thread, ice lolly cravings are common when pregnant and have not yet been proven to harm mother or baby.

mumda · 28/04/2025 22:56

I was eating ice cubes.
Eventually broke a tooth and got a crown.

hobbledyhoy · 28/04/2025 23:10

I think your husband needs to leave you to enjoy them. It’s a craving, it’ll pass.

JDM625 · 28/04/2025 23:16

Are you anaemic OP? When was your last blood test to check?

The only time I've obsessed over a food item- which was ice cubes, was when I was severely anaemic.

Azureshores · 28/04/2025 23:22

Tell dh to jog on! You enjoy your lollies 😊

one or two would be fine she can still enjoy the sugar free lollies but the occasional orange juice one will give a vitamin boost and help with iron absorption .Just moderation is key

Hadalifeonce · 29/04/2025 08:25

I used to crave ice lollies, I could easily have 2 or 3 per day. I only went for the ones that didn't contain sweeteners, as I know my body knows how to deal with sugar, but had no idea what mine (and my baby's body) would do with some artificial chemical.

Allswellthatendswelll · 29/04/2025 15:20

I absolutely loved ice lollies whilst pregnant. I had sickness on and off the whole tjme and they really helped..Also drank loads of coke zero and baby totally fine.

I don't think 2 or 3 is that bad as they are mainly kids sizes.
