I hate looking at boy names

I am going to have a baby boy soon (my first child) and I am struggling with names. Girl names were easy to think of but I can't think of any boy names I like.

I don't like any traditional common names like Peter, John or Ben. I looked at unisex names and even those don't feel right (Example:Taylor).

I'm not a fan of naming a baby after someone I know and there's no one I would consider naming a baby after even if I did. I have looked at different baby books, online and nothing feels right.

I have had people say think of something you like and I might get some inspiration from that but so far I'm stuck.

I am getting worked up as I don't know what to do. I don't have much longer before I am due to give birth and I am still looking for a name.

My family have very common names but mine is more uncommon is comparison.

Any advice?

I didn't find the right name until a couple of days before. I didn't want a popular name. I was getting really frustrated. I was quite prepared/resigned to wait until he was born but then I spotted it in a book (2nd hand so a lot less trendier names). I know no one else with his name.
You'll find the name eventually. Good luck.

I have a baby boy, my partner was set on his name and I wasn't too fussed with it but couldn't think of a name I preferred. However, now I absolutely adore his name and he suits it perfectly. Maybe wait till he's here and see what he suits! (His name is Sebastian, though he's mostly known as Seb!)

What are your girl name likes so we can get a sense of your style?

DandelionPockets · 26/04/2025 22:30

Maybe you need to meet him before finding a name? That was my experience 20months ago and we found the perfect name for him when he was 2 days old.

GreenTurtles3 · 26/04/2025 22:31

I'm thinking you like something more unusual. Modern or old fashioned? Where do you live? England or elsewhere? Any cultural or racial heritage?

I have 2 boys and we really struggled with names. So many girls names I preferred! I picked 2 classic names in the end.

I know how you feel OP. I have two sons and we couldnt agree on their names all the way through the pregnancies. The second one DH ‘let’ me have my favourite name as I had such an awful time in labour it’s the least he could do 😂 but we both agree that’s his name and he really suits it.

Im pregnant again now with number three and we find out the sex next week. Our list of girls names we both love is so long but again, not one single boys name. Why are they so hard? I’m beginning to think we are just over thinking it now and to just pick a nice name that neither of us hates and go with that because I think we have looked at every boys name in existence by this point!

I like older names Archie, Alfie, Eli etc

ijustneedaminute24 · 26/04/2025 23:11

OH and I used to watch the end credits on films and tv to see if anything caught our eye.
I definitely struggled more with a boys name than girls for some reason. Luckily the name I liked the best for DS after being vetoed by OH was used after a change of heart and we still love it years later.

If you don’t like traditional names, or common naames, why not start with looking at popularity

i did that with mine. So for example you might exclude any name in the top 100 or 500 or 1000. Or any name on an upward trajectory. Then consider initials and sounds with surname.

any middle names?

For example, some boys names that aren’t common (outside top 250) and aren’t on an upward trajectory-

Connor
Morgan
Ashton
Timothy
Richard
Dennis
Hugh
Hamish
Edwin

Go on the ons baby names lists. It’s virtually every name that exists, and you can see the lists for different years and select just the boys names. Just pick out any you don’t hate, as a start.

if you like girls names could you look at some unisex options too?

PennyPencils · 27/04/2025 07:27

Try looking at names from other countries. I got my daughter's from an old french names list and have a couple of nice boys names from it in case too.

starrynight009 · 27/04/2025 07:44

I ended up having a girl but my boy's name choice was the main character in my favourite book, so it was special to me in that way. It is a normal name but not in the top 100 boys names.

If you want to avoid the popular ones then Royal names are popular in my daughter's school for the boys - Arthur, James, Henry, Louis, Charlie, Harry etc and Biblical names like Isaac, Eli, Noah, Reuben. I'm sure it's a little dependant on where you live though.

You can wait until he's born and then see if a name comes to you!

squishousdelicious · 27/04/2025 08:47

I honestly know exactly how you feel! We struggled so much to find the right name for our son - funnily enough, we had been watching Lucifer on the TV, which got me thinking about the traditional/biblical angels and what they were called. Whilst looking it up on Google, I came across my son's name (which is not an "out there" name) and that's how we found it. Inspiration can literally come from anywhere, and when you least suspect it!

(Now desperately hoping that I'm pregnant with a girl, not a boy, for the simple fact that we just do not have another boy's name!!!)

TheIceBear · 27/04/2025 10:12

I’m the same and I’m on my second pregnancy first born was also a boy! There was only 1 name I liked and I’m very happy with that. I can’t think of any name for my next little boy.. I thought maybe it’s cos I am a woman that I can think of more girl names I like. But DH is no help whatsoever thinking of boy names.
