Early reassurance scans

I am considering a private early reassurance scan to make sure this pregnancy is viable.

Has anyone got any good experiences. I only know of one person IRL who had one and it showed she had had a mmc.
I've had a previous CP and MC so quite anxious and feel this would tell me either way.

I am 4w+2 days going by LMP.
I want to go between 6 and 8 weeks.
Has anyone had one of these scans between 6-8 weeks and found it useful?

I had one in both pregnancies but waited until 8 weeks, by 8 weeks if you see a heartbeat then you have a good chance things will stay good, and also by waiting until 8 weeks if your dates were off by a week or so you’d still be able to see a heartbeat (if all okay), rather than going at 6.5 weeks and measuring 5.5 then spending 2 weeks in limbo waiting for a rescan. OK thank you. I'll book for 8 weeks. So silly question, we i be booking that for 4 weeks on from now going by LMP?

I wouldn’t bother. I was told at EPAU what you see one day before 12 weeks might be gone the next even if you’ve seen a heartbeat. Most of the places won’t be able to support you if it’s bad news. They’re only interested in upselling and gender reveal tat

I lost two pregnancies at 9 weeks (no heartbeat at 12 wk scan) so for me that was the critical time to get to. I had a 9 week ultrasound with all 3 of my children then the usual 12 week and 20 week scan after that. It was very reassuring getting an earlier one. I think I got my 9 week scan in the NHS because of what had happened before.

I had one at 8 weeks as I needed to know how things were looking at that point after previous mc. The one I attended was very professional and good and I am glad I went. I think 8w from your last periods is a good time if you plan to go for one. And congratulations on your pregnancy! 😊

Hi

I’m high risk and after two consecutive miscarriages and a diagnosis as high risk the NHS provided scans at 6weeks, 9 weeks and 13 weeks

(I’ve also had one at 15 weeks and 21 weeks and will have another 3 or 4 before I give birth)

I disagree that you won’t be able to see anything and it was wonderful to help reassure us that our pregnancy was at least viable. Also I wanted to know if there were issues so I didn’t have to wait for a missed miscarriage and I felt more in control.

Every scan has been anxiety inducing due to my medical history but I really recommend getting scans be it on theNHS or private

I totally disagree with this

I've benefitted from early scans in the past. Nobody would claim they tell you everything is definitely going to be OK, because of course nothing can do that, but even knowing things are ok for now has been hugely reassuring after past losses.

For example, this pregnancy after my symptoms disappeared at 9 weeks (which was the point I had a previous miscarriage) I had a scan which told me the pregnancy was still going and it was not another loss. I think for the most part, they're really helpful for knowing what's going on.

MonsterBookOfTyson · 26/04/2025 17:46

Thank you all. I will definitely book one for 8 weeks.

I disagree with the comment that it's pointless before 12 weeks.

It's a bit morbid i suppose, but I used this calculator and it helped.

Ivf pregnancy so i was given a scan at 7 weeks, and went for a private one at 10 weeks. It really helped after the scan see the probability of a miscarriage go down and down. Obviously it can still happen but having reassurance everything is ok at 7 weeks, you can see the odds getting more and more in your favour that they'll stay ok

It’s so worrying isn’t it.

We all know that there are zero guarantees and we all could lose our pregnancy at any point.

But for me, after multiple miscarriages I took such a lot of comfort at that moment.. for that moment to see my longed awaited, long hoped for little baby on that screen at 6 weeks.

Even if it all ended an hour later, I was a mother for that short time.

There is absolutely nothing anyone can do, nothing, not a single thing if it’s going to end, but at that moment, I had my baby growing safely.

You do whatever gets you through. Just do it x

Mine have been IVF pregnancies so got an early scan included and did find it reassuring. I also needed to tell work early due to the nature of my job so it was good to have a bit more certainty.

SophieRules · 27/04/2025 07:09

I would try to wait until 7/8 weeks as 6 weeks can be too early and cause unnecessary worrying. After a MMC I personally found them useful, had one probably every 1 1/2 ish weeks until 12 weeks. Then after that I think I had had one more.

HufflepuffElmo · 27/04/2025 07:28

I've just been for an early scan at what I thought was 8 weeks turns out in measuring at 6 weeks 2 days but she's also bringing me back next week just to make sure the flicker of the heart is the flicker cos it's so small. It's not the news I wanted but I have that little bit more hope and I'm getting an extra scan just to be sure I'm no worse off than before and I know the pregnancy has developed a week beyond what the previous one did and the sac looks good. Roll on friday
