Frantic fetal movement

I am 30 weeks today and the last couple of nights/this morning when I’m lying down I’ve had frantic fetal movements. They’re aren’t like kicks they are really really quick and almost shake my whole stomach. Is this normal?

I spoke to maternity triage and the midwife said she thinks it all sounds normal but I’m not all that convinced it’s really bizarre.

Go and ask for a scan. Any unusual for you movements should be checked. If only for your peace of mind.

Limeandbasil90 · 23/04/2025 09:00

go in and get checked now, don’t delay

Nope2024 · 23/04/2025 10:07

@Sunnysunshine12346 Definitely get it checked out, but try not to worry too much - I'm 31 weeks and often have the same and everything has been okay when I've been for scans. ❤️ Mine sometimes feel like twitching on the side of my stomach, sometimes like kicks, sometimes like swooshing, sometimes like stretching.

Push to get seen, trust your gut, try not to worry. x

Odd question, but is it hiccups?
First pregnancy I remember waking in the night and thought little one was having a fit before the penny dropped.

Ariadne08 · 23/04/2025 13:00

I agree with the others, definitely get checked out.

CamillaMacauley · 23/04/2025 13:04

Any change in the pattern of the movement should be checked. People focus on reduced movements but it’s also situations like this. You might not need a scan but I’d certainly be asking for a ctg. chances are it’s fine but best to be safe.

squirrelnutkins1 · 23/04/2025 13:10

Always get checked. Always.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 23/04/2025 13:52

As above, always go with your gut and be pushy if you need to.

For me, I get this when I have had anything sugary - an orange or chocolate etc.

gamerchick · 23/04/2025 13:54

Is it not hiccups?

Sunnysunshine12346 · 23/04/2025 16:16

Thanks all, I will call triage again to be seen.
The only way to describe it would be like a spasm or (it sounds dramatic but I’m not suggesting it is this) a seizure. It’s too fast to be kicks.
It seems to be only when I lie on my left hand side

Is it like a vibration? I had this sometimes. People kept saying it's hiccups but it was about 100x faster than that. Like the sound and feel when a phone vibrates on a table next to you.

Best explanation I found online was that it was the baby temporarily pressing on a nerve and it's your own nerve you can feel, not the baby's movements.

Still a good idea to get checked if something doesn’t seem right but that's what it was with me and nothing to worry about.

Sunnysunshine12346 · 23/04/2025 16:29

Have called triage again but they don’t seem to think it’s a concern at all unless there’s reduced fetal movement following things so I’m just going to see how I get on for the rest of the day.

not quite vibrating, it’s almost like if baby was to be continuously punching on my stomach with both hands with speed. Really bizarre, apologies as I know my examples are not the best. It’s really hard to describe!

@JuneySunshine this is exactly how it feels, is that what hiccups feel like? It’s first baby so I have no idea - sorry!

ALL changes in movement should be checked out, tell them what you need to tell them to be seen.

GivingUpFinally · 23/04/2025 16:36

Judy posting here to say. Any change in movement pattern thats noticeable/concerning should be checked. Not just reduced movements.

Hiccups can be quite rapid and aggressive for lack of a better word. Depending on how baby is situated. Hiccups tend to be rhythmic. Think about when ypu have Hiccups...

BananaPalm · 23/04/2025 16:51

I’d get it checked. Towards the end of my pregnancy my son didn’t like when I was in certain positions (he would be kicking/ moving a lot). During labour it turned out that it was probably the cord tightening up or something similar as during the labour itself my son’s heart rate would drop in these exact positions. Perhaps it would be best if they checked your baby’s heart rate in the positions.

JuneySunshine · 23/04/2025 17:38

@Sunnysunshine12346 Hehe quite possibly, if it's rhythmic and jerky.
I can't remember when abouts mine started with them last time. I'm 24 weeks this time and no sign yet. When I did have them they were always at night so fits with you lying down.
