Third trimester - normal or something else?

Hi everyone, I am currently 32 weeks and with this being my first pregnancy I'm never sure when to be worried.
Overall I haven't suffered much with symptoms apart from being tired during my pregnancy until recently, so I know I'm super lucky.

Since coming into the third trimester I've started to struggle with back pain, lack of sleep, recurring UTIs. I had a horrible and traumatic experience when I visited the emergency department in my local hospital so want to be sure I'm not over reacting before going back there.

Since Friday I've felt pretty rubbish. The only way I can describe it is like a constant horrible hangover. I feel sick, weak, dizzy have very low energy. I borrowed a BP monitor today and BP was 139/91 today which is higher than ever before but doesn't seem to be in the red zone based on my research.

I felt my movements were slightly decreased yesterday but she's been moving lots today - I have an anterior placenta so generally don't really feel loads of movements/have a movement pattern, so never really sure what's normal.

I am overweight so I had a Gestational Diabetes test earlier in the pregnancy which was fine, but I know it can develop later on.

I just wondered if these symptoms could be related to late onset GD, something else, or if it is just normal for the third trimester?

Sorry if I sound silly, but advice would be much appreciated as it's a bank holiday weekend my GP is closed tomorrow. Thanks in advance

I'd ring MAU for advice - they'll probably get you in for a check up!
I'm borderline hypertension, and have been told to call in if either number on BP goes above 140/90 x

Yes, definitely get checked over.

IOYOYO · 20/04/2025 21:36

Sorry you’ve been feeling rotten @Mummytobe2025xxx I don’t have much knowledge on GD, but after 2 pregnancies, one of which featured an anterior placenta, I’d say don’t wait to get checked. Your symptoms could be a bug, but they might be something else that needs attention.

I’d be wary of at home tests for BP or similar unless they’re medical grade and you’ve been shown how to use them by a professional.

Re: movements, I was embarrassed by the amount of times I had to go in for checks when I had an anterior placenta but I was always told never to risk it, and midwives were always able to assure me that everything was okay. You say movements are plentiful today which is good, but if you’re worried about how you’re feeling, your bp, yesterday’s movements, always call your maternity ward and run it by them. If they need to call you in to check you over they will. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Get ANY change in movements checked. Please. That includes a perceived increase.

WickWood · 20/04/2025 21:48

I echo everyone else, call triage and ask them for advice. I would have got checked out yesterday personally when you noticed a reduction in movements, I know that doesn't help you now, but for next time (though hopefully there won't be a next time) always, always get a change in movements checked. I also agree with the other poster, I'd get a big increase checked, especially as you don't usually feel lots due to your placenta.

Good luck. Always contact triage if you have any worries or concerns, that's what they're there for x

I second other posters that you should get checked, but actually I'm basically bedbound with tiredness and pain in my third trimester. This is my second pregnancy and tests all fine so it's just how it is for me :(

It's worth being checked though, because most women's symptoms aren't this extreme and you need to rule out anything more sinister or anything fixable (like anaemia, which can be fixed with prescription iron tablets)

mumsnoangel · 21/04/2025 21:43

Definitely get checked out. Your bp could signal pre-eclampsia.

Dullblue1234 · 22/04/2025 07:23

How are you doing @Mummytobe2025xxx ?

Everlore · 22/04/2025 07:44

I hope you were able to get checked out and everything's good.
You don't need to go to A and E or your GP, your maternity triage should see you straight away if you have any concerns, just give them a call any time you're worried, they will never dismiss your concerns as they know how important it is to investigate anything out of the ordinary, especially any changes in baby movement.
I had a mercifully straightforward pregnancy however, due to my anxiety, I had cause to contact maternity triage several times and they were always kind and reassuring and happy for me to go in any time I was worried, they never made me feel like I was making a fuss over nothing.
I also had a recurrent, though asymptomatic, UTI for the first five months of pregnancy which my midwife and GP took seriously as it can lead to pregnancy complications. It went away eventually after several doses of antibioticsbut my consultant advised me to remain on a low dose of antibiotics until the end of pregnancy, just to be on the safe side. I hope you're receiving appropriate treatment for your UTI.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I've seen my midwife and everything seems to be ok and BP is fine now, but I'm being sent for a growth scan and another GD test as sugar seems to be a trigger for me feeling unwell. No more Easter eggs for me for now😊

Glad all seems well and you’re being looked after 😊

SJM1988 · 22/04/2025 12:44

I'm glad you are being sent for another CD test. Mine developed at 32-24 weeks with my last pregnancy. Like you the only symptom was feeling rubbish after sugar.
