Anyone had a successful spontaneous labour following a sweep at 1cm dilated?

I had a sweep today with some slight bleeding afterwards but no other symptoms. I've not experienced any cramping or any other discomfort. The sweep itself was unfortunately extremely painful. I'm 41w +1day today and am booked in to be induced in 3 days which I really don't want.

Babys head is very engaged, midwife said it's the lowest they've ever felt.
Cervix was firm.
Length of cervix was still 3-4cm
1cm Dilated.
Posterior cervix - midwife pulled it forward

Is it your first baby OP?

Yeah first baby.

He's been engaged for weeks and is in cephalic position, with his back to my stomach. Just my cervix isn't budging.

I was similar at my second sweep at 41+0 (also first baby), only 1cm but head had been engaged and low for ages. Went into labour spontaneously on the way to my induction appointment at 41+2!! I did a lot of walking up and down stairs

@Hello2025baby ah that's amazing you went into labour on the way! I don't have stairs where I live, maybe that's not helped my cervix! Perhaps I should go round a friend's over the weekend and borrow theirs 😂 I'll try anything at this point!!

I had both mine at 41+3. Refused sweep the first time, had it the second time and went into labour within 12 hours. Tbh I think she broke my waters 😆 I know it’s just about impossible but try to relax — could be your last chance for a chilled out evening for a while! Do you know if women in your family often have long gestations? My mum and my sister both went at least a week overdue in most of their pregnancies so I wasn’t too fussed.

@RoseAndGeranium My mum went to 42 weeks with her first, 37 weeks with second and then she was a 41 weeks with me so could be a family thing! Definitely trying to relax but it's hard with the impending induction. Just wishing my cervix would get a move on 😂

Midwife attempted sweep at 38 weeks, it fucking hurt and she couldn’t even reach my cervix. I was induced a few days later, thought it wouldn’t work as I so clearly ‘wasn’t ready’, they put the pessary in and within 2 hours I was in labour.

Your cervix might just be the last minute hero type! After my waters broke with my second baby they checked my cervix at about 1.30 am: it was 1cm dilated. At 7.15 I was cutting my baby's cord after a very spontaneous indeed delivery. I didn't have my cervix checked with my first until I was pretty far along in labour, but I expect it was similar that time too -- I didn't really get any Braxton Hicks contractions, and the labour pains came on pretty hard and fast.
If you really don't want to be induced you can say no (they get quite shirty about it in some hospitals but it is your choice -- I declined repeatedly, which the consultants were very snippy about) but if your baby doesn't come in the next couple of days and you'd prefer to follow medical advice you might find it reassuring to have a look at some of the 'good induction story' threads on here.

Hi just coming to this thread from coming back from my midwife appointment. You’ve described exactly what my midwife described my cervix is like and I’m 40 weeks today. How long after this post was baby born I’m worried about my cervix still being firm? Did the sweep work for you?

Try not to worry. I am a midwife and looked after a lady last night who had gone for a sweep yesterday afternoon and the midwife wasn't able to reach her cervix. She came into me contracting well and 3cm dilated at 6am.

It will happen when it happens.

For labour to start you need oxytocin so do lots of things you love. Walking, nice foods, cuddles, sex even if you fancy it, and sleep as much as you can. Also stay nice and hydrated.

Good luck!
