Vitamin B12 and low iron

I am currently 31 and four days. I was told the other day that my blood results came back and I am low in both Vitamin B12 and iron. It was arranged for me to speak to a doctor today.

They have recommended Vitamin B12 and iron injections as they will work into my system quickly, which I will be starting in a few days.

They have gone through the pros and cons with me.

I'm just worried as I read about the possibilities of the baby's brain not developing properly, low birth weight, stillbirth etc. They did a scan a few days ago and there was a heartbeat and the brain did look 'normal' at the time

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there certain foods or things to do to help?

I eat fruit, vegetables, bread and fish. I also try to drink water almost daily.

Hi,

Sorry I know this is an old post, but I just wondered how things turned out for you.

I'm 30 weeks and I've just had iron infusions and I've been told I need B12 injections.

I have the same concerns about the health of my baby and also what it means in the long term for myself - I understand my iron will resolve but will I need B12 injections forever?

I'm just really anxious and feeling rubbish

I have Pernicious anaemia so have regular b12 injections since before becoming pregnant. They really help with that rubbish exhausted feeling! Your body prioritises baby’s needs so the b12 you do have will be going to baby first.
foods that help are red meat, broccoli, even marmite!
you will only need b12 injections forever if you aren’t absorbing it from your food - for example if you have PA like me. If it’s just a temporary thing or a diet related one you can take tablets if you are vegan for example.

I had anaemia during both pregnancies, treated with iron tablets.
Both children were absolutely fine and did well at school.
