Early scan - measuring behind, no fetal pole - what was your outcome?

Looking for stories (positive and negative) for measuring behind at early scans.

i got a faint positive pregnancy test on 19 March. Clear positive the next day. Based on this and LMP I should be 7+2 (as of yesterday).

Went for an early scan and they saw a gestational sack that was measured at 6+3, so 6 days behind.

There was a yolk sac, and something that could be a fetal pole but the tech wasn’t sure at all so on the notes it says there was no fetal pole seen. No heartbeat.

I’ve got a rescan booked in a week. I know it could go either way, but would be really interested to hear your experiences. I think this week is going to drag :’(

Hello! Congratulations!

I empathise - this situation is so anxiety inducing!!

6 days in the grand scheme of things this early isn’t always a huuuge concern. It could be you ovulated a little later, or scan visibility just isn’t great. It’s good there’s a yolk sac and the start of a possible pole.

I was measuring 2 weeks behind with my early pregnancy last year, which made it to around 9 weeks with slow growth, always being about 2 weeks behind, and then sadly was a MMC.

wishing you all the best and hope your week doesn’t drag too badly.

6 days behind in itself isn’t always bad news. It’s the lack of fetal pole and heartbeat at 7 weeks which is more concerning. I had IVF and went for a scan at 7 weeks and was told no heartbeat which is bad news and they referred me to the EPU for management.
Obviously with IVF the dates are set in stone so can’t be wrong. I guess with a natural pregnancy there’s always the chance you ovulated a bit later than you thought and you’re just behind. All you can really do is wait unfortunately. I would prepare yourself for the possibility of bad news though just in case.

I went for an early scan told similar and that my dates could be wrong and to come back in a week.

I knew it was impossible for dates to be wrong.
long story short - my daughter will be 21 in June.

try not to worry x

Negative experience here: I went at 6+something, saw gestational sac but no yolk sac and no fetal pole. Went on to miscarry a few weeks later.

Positive news: Have two happy and healthy DC and another one on the way.

My previous pregnancy I had a scan at 9 weeks and was only measuring about 6, albeit with a heartbeat. Unfortunately that did end in miscarriage. Your date difference isn't so big though, and I've definitely heard lots of stories of healthy pregnancies which progressed from measuring behind

Thanks everybody for your experiences. The waiting game is hard!

This can go either way unfortunately. I’ve seen it more often than not ending in a MC.. but this applies to the women who are sure of their ovulation dates.

HOWEVER! LMP is not accurate as you don’t know when you ovulated etc - so it’s possible you ovulated later! I hope it all works out for you x

I’ve looked again at my dates and think there is a chance I could have been 6+6 yesterday so would only be 3 days behind.

is it a concern that she wasn’t sure there was a fetal pole at between 6+3 and 7 weeks???

Just to update for anyone reading in the future I have been for my scan yesterday and sadly lost the baby. There was a fetal pole this time only measuring 6 weeks (should be 8+) and no heartbeat. With lots of bleeding around the sac.

I am so sorry to hear your news.

Bad news from me I’m afraid OP, also no sign of fetal pole, the doctor said ‘it’s so small I can barely see anything, but what I can see looks wrong.’ But I started miscarrying three days later. I was very upset at the time as the baby would have been a 2 year 1 month age gap from my daughter, and I’d been aiming for 2-2.5 years, so was thrilled to have conceived so early.

A positive ending though: everyone told me that official advice was to wait a few months to try again, but one nurse told me my womb would be ‘extra hospitable’ following the loss due to a double lining making it extra spongy and easy to attach (something like that!). I originally conceived in November, lost it in December, and then tried again in January. By February 9th I was holding another positive pregnancy test and my son is now 1.5 years old.

Editing after seeing your post. So sorry for your loss, OP. Look after yourself x
