Hello,

Hey, yes I am A- too! I’ve had 3 pregnancies and all of my children had positive blood groups! They will soon be able to tell you what blood group your baby is. If your baby is rhesus like us, then there’ll be no actions to take! If baby is not, then you’ll need some routine anti-d injections in your pregnancy (the amount and when they’ve given changes under each district). If you get a bleed in your pregnancy, call up your midwife and after a chat about how much blood you’ve had come out/the colour of the blood, they’ll very likely suggest you come in for an anti-d injection. If you take a fall or a knock to the bump too, call up and again they’ll likely have you in for an anti-d. after you’ve given birth, they’ll give you another anti-d then too.
I don’t believe being rhesus negative causes you to have more bleeds, than if you were not. In one pregnancy i had no bleeds, in one pregnancy two bleeds and in one pregnancy I had 12 bleeds.
i know it feels daunting, but we have all the science now and the anti-d injection. As long as you have the routine ones, and as long as you call them regarding any bleeds or bumps, it’ll be absolutely fine.
always call up to discuss any bleeds. Mine were only interested if the blood was a teaspoon or more and red, slight spotting they weren’t concerned about it, but importantly I called every single time to check/get the advice/and get it recorded.
good luck.

I wanted to add, I could opt for where I had the anti-d given. I found the arm was the easiest place to take it. I found it very uncomfortable to be given in the leg. I was never offered it on the bum though! 😂

I've had 2 kids and am B-. Had anti-d during and after each birth so I guess my children are Rh+ like dh.

I’m rh-and have two rh+ children. No complications, all fine. Have the anti-d and try to stress.

Will they offer me the anti D injection?

I am B- and both of my children are RH+. My first I had no issues, had my anti-d at 28 weeks and then after birth once they tested placenta. My current pregnancy, they tested my blood at 16 weeks and said the baby was rh+ so have had anti-d at 28 weeks again. However, i had a fall at 23 weeks so I called triage and they said to come in and I had to have anti-d as a precaution. It’s now come back after 28 weeks bloods that I have “anti-d antibodies” so have to have fortnightly blood tests as a precaution. I’ve been told it’s nothing to worry about. Try not worry

If your baby tests as being Rh- you won't need anti-d. You only get anti-d if the baby is Rh+. If its given its normally later on in pregnancy or if you have a fall/accident or if you have bleeding.

This is the fetal screening i talked about in my post. If your baby is - then you won't need the anti-D that everyone is talking about.

Yeah! When you say an accident (as in knocking your bump) does it have to be a really hard knock? Or if you have a slight knock do you still have to contact your midwife?

I’m also A- and had a miscarriage last pregnancy so I had to get the injection.
I’m now pregnant again and already had a test to see if any antibodies were present and there were none so that is good and I had a bleed last week so I had to get the injection for that. At 25 weeks they will take my blood and test what blood group the baby is which will then determine if I need any more injections.
It’s literally nothing a ton of women with rh- have babies without complications.
the injection itself is just a sting nothing more.

I've had two and mine were straightforward as well.

I don't know the blood group of my kids. @chateo did you find out via fetal DNA screening & @CrispAppleStrudels how long have they been doing that where you are? I'd my youngest 2.5 years ago.

Yeah I found out via fetal DNA screening. It was only last year so I’m not sure how long they’ve been doing it.

ecossegirl91 · 15/04/2025 22:42

I’m o- and all good here. Have one toddler (also neg blood) and currently 30 weeks preggo. Anti d given at 29 weeks in both (they don’t test here) and zero issues. Don’t give it much thought tbh!

MumQ8 · 16/04/2025 03:59

Yes I'm A- and my pregency was pretty healthy and actually mostly an easy one. Only thing I got was car sick but that's pregency not a blood type. I didn't have the morning sickness. Etc.

I did have my appendix burst at 23 weeks, but again nothing to do with the blood group. It was just the way everything got squshed.

My baby was super healthy, and a happy chappy.

TheIceBear · 16/04/2025 07:09

I am A-. Didn’t have any issues with my pregnancy with my dc. Can’t even remember if his blood type is positive or not in my country they test after birth and give you more anti d if the baby is positive. Just be aware if you fall or have any spotting during pregnancy you need to contact them to get the anti d . I had spotting in my last pregnancy and needed it a couple of extra times. Had a fall in this pregnancy and had to get it also.

MuddyMoments · 16/04/2025 08:17

I also have a negative blood group and as others have said it caused no issues during pregnancy. I had my little boy in 2021 and at the time in my area they couldn’t/didn’t test baby’s blood group whilst he was in the womb. Instead I had an anti- d injection and in my area they actually gave me it via IV into the crease of my arm (where they would normally take blood) so it didn’t hurt, just had to sit for 10/15 mins whilst it was fed in about 28 weeks I think. I then had another when he was born because they tested his blood and found he was a positive blood group tbh it was prob and injection the 2nd time, but they did it so soon after the was born still in the delivery room and with everything else going on I didn’t really notice it happening.

Im pregnant with baby no.2 now and at my booking appt I mentioned to my midwife I had a negative blood group and she told me now my trust do the baby’s blood test when its in the womb so once they do that if this baby is positive I will have to have anti d again.

It really made no difference to my pregnancy at all and I never had any knocks and bumps or bleeds, so it really was just all fine.

What specifically are you worried about? No sense being worried when there's plenty of info out there to hopefully put your mind at ease. Have you read much into it or gotten a RH Negative info leaflet from your hospital? In this day and age it's nothing at all to he worried about, it's so normal to have a negative blood type it's a daily occurrence in maternity services. Once you know about it and follow the advice it is safe. It's cases where you don't attend your care and don't follow the advice that it becomes an issue. Has someone said something to make you particular worried? Because honestly it's not something to be concerned about!
