I’ve had two emergency c sections before so I should really know but ….. what do I need to pack for my hospital bag for baby and me ? I’m having a planned section so far on my list I have adult nappies and baby nappies 😂

I've got on my list for my planned c section
Slippers
Flip flops for shower
Long phone charger
Maternity pads
Disposable underwear
Breast pads
Pjs
Nighties
Nursing bras/ normal bras
Toiletries
Dark towel and face towel
Face wipes
Cooling mist for face
Lip balm
Dry shampoo
Hand wipes
Antibacterial spray for hands
Laundry bag
Snacks and drinks

Baby's bag
Sleep suits
Vests
Hat
Nappies
Scratch mittens
Cotton wool balls for nappy change and cleaning
Nappy cream
Blanket x 2
Cardigan
Coming home outfit
Roll up changing mat
Muslin cloths
Dummy's

@Rainbowsunshine81 wow that’s pretty comprehensive! I wouldn’t use a dummy unless absolutely needed.
OP unless there’s an issue you are unlikely to stay more than a couple days if that. I’ve had two sections and there were complications so stayed for four days each time.
Nightie with easy breast access - two of them.
Nursing bra.
Slippers
Change of clothes, several pairs of underwear.
More maternity pads than you think possible (my waters broke and I soaked through my supply before I’d even had the baby).
Usual toiletries.
Book/magazines
Phone charger
Baby: couple onesies, hat, blanket.
Muslin
nappies

That’s it. Hospital supplied some stuff too. I had one shower while there. Food was dire my DH brought some in.
My baby came early I wasn’t fully packed first time but really you don’t need much.

@mondaytosunday I've probably gone overboard, I'm just taking some dummy's just in case, hopefully won't need to use them.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 15/04/2025 10:59

@TheThreeMiracles I'm hoping to breastfeed, but not putting pressure on myself, so just in case I'm taking some ready made formula bottles with me.

I have had a planned section before and ended up in the hospital for 5 days- I’m about to go in again for another one and I have a list of the most important things from last time:

Just on the dummy, I am a Dr and work in a child development service and we do actually recommend dummies now at the very start, particularly for babies born prematurely (not really beyond 4-6 months). It reduces the risk of SID’s and can help to develop reflexes. Ideally you would establish breastfeeding alongside this which you can do, you just need to be mindful about whether it impacts on that. Each to their own really, but sometimes it’s judged by some people as a negative thing which is based on old knowledge. I’ll be taking some this time.

Pre-prepared formula and teats- Sometimes breast feeding works, sometimes it doesn’t. Often when in hospital babies end up having top up formula feeds alongside breastfeeding to aid with establishing breastfeeding. There’s no problem doing this, particularly if you’re in for quite a few days which often means the Mother needs extra care for recovery.

Swaddle/ blanket for swaddling
muslin cloth
nappies
few sleep suits/ vests
something to wear home if you want to have a special send off
car seat
pregnancy pillow
nipple pads and some Johnson’s baby wash wipes- if you’re still there when your milk comes in it’ll help with feeling clean
I liked having a nice body wash with me for the shower but I was there for what felt like a lifetime.
whatever you can wear to breastfeed/ skin to skin
slippers
flip flops(for shower and leaving with bloated feet)
pads and lots of underwear
eye mask/ ear buds to reduce noise
Handheld fan (post natal wards are very very warm)
flannel to cool
cordial to add to water
Snacks
long charger

Seems like you got a great list suggestion there. My boy came earlier and I had to have an emergency c section so I was not prepared.

But my suggested sentimental list if it interests you.
Have a First outfit, having an item with like a soft toy or something to take a picture of next to the baby. They so tiny for such a short time, it's nice to capture that moment with something you can keep. Take a tape measure they didn't measure my baby, and I only got to it so late, and I wish I knew what he was at birth.
Train your partner to take pictures, I went in after an hour sleep was in labour for hours. I was to exhausted and I regret not having more or better photos. If you have a printer, take a photocopy of hands and feet when home, or do ink or casting.

Snacks for afterwards on postnatal!

cloudjumper · 15/04/2025 13:08

You won’t need a changing mat in hospital, nor a blanket. And no nappy cream when they’re newborn

Maddy70 · 15/04/2025 13:11

The most important thing is salt!! The food is super bland (not as helpful as others posts but it mattered to me )

TheThreeMiracles · 25/04/2025 21:29

Thank you for your replies !! How many vests ? Baby grows etc should I pack ? Will 2x pack of pads be enough ? You’d think I was a ftm lol xx

Peppermint tea bags and windeeze for afterwards - absolute godsends!

Knitily · 25/04/2025 21:53

Chewing gum! Helps with post-surgery gas

I would have a few vests, sleepsuits, nappies in your hospital bag, but then have more that you keep in the car, so your partner can bring more up easily. We ended up being on the ward for a week and needed lots, but equally wouldn't have wanted to have it all with us at once.

How many vests and baby grows should I take ? Im packing this weekend but dont want to under or over pack xx
