Sickness / nausea worse second pregnancy?

I am guessing this is common as not able to relax as much this time… but did anyone else have it much worse 2nd time round and did it end around the same time?

Last time had nausea til around 14 weeks. I am praying it’s the same this time but it’s been so bad that I’ve been taking medication which only takes the edge off.

It’s impossible to say really. Every pregnancy is so, so different. My pregnancy with DD was awful. I was nauseous so much in the first trimester and it did ease up a little but never went away. And the heartburn was next level.

This time round… nothing.

It SHOULD ease up in the second trimester, but unfortunately you can’t use one of your pregnancies as a yard stick for your next ones as it’s just chance really!

I've always heard sickness is worse for a girl. I'd say this was slightly true for me, and the sickness lasted a few weeks longer

That’s just a load of rubbish. It’s just something people say with no meaning.

I had two girls and no sickness with either.

gertrudebiggles · 09/04/2025 20:01

@TheJollyMooseummm no. It's backed up by research; multiple studies.
Obviously it's a generalisation, but your one piece of anecdotal evidence doesn't disprove it.

What research?

happyhermione · 09/04/2025 20:03

@TheJollyMoose cambridge uni linked GDF15 to morning sickness the christmas before last. Girls are a bit more likely to have higher circulating blood levels

TheJollyMoose · 09/04/2025 20:04

Yeah, just looked into it. There is no conclusive research or any research strong enough to be considered definitive proof.

happyhermione · 09/04/2025 20:05

Here’s the research. I’ve heard both lead researcher mention the GDF15 link to girls on podcasts. Which obviously isn’t to say the levels can’t be higher in boys on an individual basis but very generally more sickness = more likely to be a girl. Especially for second pregnancies

Yeah that study cannot establish direct causality between GDF15 levels and severity of pregnancy sickness.

happyhermione · 09/04/2025 20:12

You sound much smarter than me @TheJollyMoose but my understanding was that there wasn’t a direct link in levels because sickness is also influenced by factors like prior exposure to the hormone (through previous pregnancies) and other hormones like HCG that they’d previously misattributed solely to sickness but they now know play a smaller role. There is a proven link though, no? It was all over the news as breaking - I remember because I was very sick and pregnant at the time so everyone was sending it to me haha

happyhermione · 09/04/2025 20:19

Oh and the mother’s sort of innate sensitivity to the hormone too.

Sorry to derail O.P., but if anyone’s interested in this study please Google Marlena Fejzo. Her backstory is both fascinating and tragic (she lost a child to hyperemesis gravidarun which inspired her to undertake the research into morning sickness) I’m not remotely a science person (obvious from my descriptions!!) but I was utterly compelled by this study. Fezjo battled so hard for funding too while public grants were given willy nilly to men’s causes like erectile dysfunction

Be that as it may, it also means the other poster's assertion of a link is not " load of rubbish. It’s just something people say with no meaning."

By coincidence this is the second thread this morning I've read where your responses are needlessly aggressive and rude.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 09/04/2025 20:22

I’m afraid my sickness was much worse in my second pregnancy in every respect (and dc2 was a boy following a girl!).

DC1 it lasted until 24 weeks, went away for a bit then came back in the last month or so.

DC2 was constant from 3.5weeks pregnant until birth. I vomited multiple times every single day. It was pretty grim. Tho he is totally worth it and the memories have faded 11 years on! It is one of the reasons we never had a dc3 tho!

gertrudebiggles · 09/04/2025 20:39

Another consideration is a lack of sleep. With a little one to care for, many of us get less sleep the 2nd time round!

monktasmic · 09/04/2025 22:55

Dd1 I vomited myself inside out the whole pregnancy apart from about 6 weeks around 22 weeks, I ended up on a drip for HG - vomited throughout labour too - it was was horrendous.
2nd DD I was sick from week 4-14 (physically) and then fine. DS I thought I had miscarried as I had few symptoms, indeed none at all from week 8?

dd1 is the only one of mine who is rhesus +ve - the others are negative, as am I.I wonder if that had any bearing upon my symptoms?

My first three pregnancies I had hyperemesis. One live birth and two miscarriages. Pregnancy 4, currently 15 weeks barely any sickness in comparison to normal for me.

JungleRun21 · 10/04/2025 22:56

First pregnancy I had hyperemesis all the way through and was medicated. Think I had 2 weeks in the middle where I felt better but the vomiting returned worse than before.

Now pregnant with my 2nd and the hyperemesis is back and much worse than the first time. Im medicated again, but with Xonvea, 3 lots of medication prescribed before this. Have been admitted to hispital for fluids and IV meds as ive been so dehydrated.
Its really awful this time and the nausea is non stop.

Barleysugar86 · 10/04/2025 22:58

I had it worse with my second pregnancy. I had boy then girl though.

sel2223 · 11/04/2025 00:12

Mum to 2 girls here and second pregnancy the sickness and nausea was so much worse!
It started earlier, was much more severe and lasted my entire pregnancy up to 39 weeks.
I was diagnosed with HG and on medication for a lot of the pregnancy but it didn't stop it completely.

DramaAlpaca · 11/04/2025 00:16

Sickness was worse for me in each of my three pregnancies, and started earlier. Eventually stopped at 20 weeks each time. All my children are boys.

MaMaMaMaBaker · 11/04/2025 00:18

My first pregnancy was five months but I sailed through it.

Second pregnancy was to term and I was sick and miserable the entire way through.

First a girl, second a boy.

Oh I am so sorry you are going through that. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be especially with a DC. Sending you a big hug
