27/28 weeks pregnant fit to fly?

I have just booked an holiday abroad from when I will be in my 27th weeks, but I have just realised that I will be 28weeks + 0 days on the day we fly back. I can see airlines require a fit to fly certificate for over 28weeks. Do I really need one? Any experience? Thanks!

I'd get one, rather have one and not need it than the alternative.

I’m in the same boat & I didn’t think I needed one for that stage…. Does anyone how to get this? As I’d rather be safe than sorry….

@cloud2021 which airline?

Some say they need a fit to fly note after a certain week, some don't need anything but won't fly you after so-and-so many weeks. Some might only need a note saying in which week you are.

I flew at 30/31 weeks with easyJet and was asked on both journeys before boarding. But it wasn't a fit to fly note - just a declaration of how far along I was

I flew at 26 weeks and back again at like 27 plus 4. Midwife didn’t give a fit to fly but just rather a letter confirming my due date and tbh no one asked for anything or even seemed to notice I was pregnant

Same as some of the responses above, I flew at 28 weeks in my first and second pregnancies and was carrying with me a note from the doctor stating my due date and confirming that I was fit for travel. It was with different companies and I wasn't asked to provide it any of the 4 flights.

We flew with jet 2 at 28 weeks, I had to get a fit to fly from an online doctor as it was a last minute holiday and couldn't get one from the gp or midwife at that time of day. The airline didn't ask for it either outbound or inbound. I obviously didn't look that pregnant.

Thanks all. I am flying in with BA and back with WizzAir. Both ask for a certificate for over 28weeks. I was convinced I would have been 27+6 on the return but got it wrong for a day :) this is my second pregnancy so I am definetly showing quite big.
I do have a midwife appt a few days before going, do you know if I need to ask in advance or I can just see the midwife and she can give me a certificate now and then?

I'm a midwife, ask in advance for the Fit to Fly letter. Just note that if you are consultant led the midwife can't sign it, and you'll need a Dr to sign one instead

Doolallies · 09/04/2025 13:31

Flew with BA last week and I’m 33 weeks. I couldn’t get a fit letter from midwife at hospital or gp as neither do them as standard any more.
i had a scan latter with hospital address and my DD on it. It confirmed single pregnancy and no issues. I kept it in my hand luggage in case but my plan was just to talk through as normal. Which I did. No one stopped me or asked about my bump. This was Gatwick and short haul

Don't forget to make sure your travel insurance covers pregnancy and the baby. Highly unlikely there will beca problem, but best to be sure now.

My response on a similar thread the other day x

"Just came back from a holiday with my daughter who was 27 weeks when we went and 28 weeks when we came back. Her BMI was above 30 at the start of her pregnancy so no private ones would give her a fit to fly.
Her GP and Midwife also said they didn't give fit to fly notes. Her midwife did print off a letter saying she had seen her and her due date, and signed and stamped this.
In the end no-one asked for anything. My daugter is measuring 4 weeks ahead so we did expect to be questioned but nothing. We flew with TUI."

Thank you all!! very very helpful! I am not consultant led so I will call the midwife to see if she can prepare me a letter... otherwise I think I will just go with my paper notes etc. this is a short haul to Europe and as I said I will literally enter my 28week on the day of return.

I really doubt your midwife will prepare you a letter just to let you know

biscuitcat · 10/04/2025 12:55

I flew at 28/29 weeks or so with my second and technically should have had a letter - but in my area midwives don’t do them and it was expensive to get from the GP or privately so I wore a top that hid the bump fairly well and stood a little back and behind my oldest’s buggy at check in and no one asked.

Hello, luckily I just spoke with my midwife and they said to provide them the template from the airline and fill it with my information and they will sign it and send it back to me!
