Carpal tunnel surgery in second trimester

Hi All, looking for some advice really. I’ve suffered badly with carpal tunnel for many years (non-pregnancy related). Tried splints and all the usual but nothing has helped. I’ve finally been seen and had the nerve studies which confirm carpal tunnel and since fallen pregnant with no.2. I am now on the list to have the decompression surgery which is a very minor op under a local anaesthetic.

My surgery date would be when I am 24 weeks. My consultant is keen to do this before the baby arrives and also due to the recovery of managing just one child, rather than if I wait then have a toddler and baby to deal with. Plus leaving it another 12-18months could make my hand worse.

It sounds silly but my concern is the local anaesthetic, and despite doing a lot of research into it, it mainly seems used for dental work and I cannot find anyone who has had this surgery whilst pregnant. I know the local is “considered safe” during pregnancy but after previous losses I can’t shake the anxiety of is it the right thing to be doing or should I wait. It would be a lot easier to do it now but I am just worried trying to make a decision.

So I guess I am looking for reassurance if anyone has had anything similar in pregnancy and it was all ok? or what would you do in this situation?

Thank you

the local will be the same sort of thing they'd be using if you needed any sort of incidental surgery related to the pregnancy (eg if you needed a cervical suture) or if you needed anything doing during labour/delivery. The timing of any procedure in pregnancy should be a multidisciplinary decision so hopefully your obstetrician's been involved too - if not then chat to them - they may be able to help your decision making.

I haven’t had this type of surgery but when I was 14weeks I had a spinal anaesthetic as I needed surgery for a cervical stitch. I was so worried about the effects of the anaesthetic but was assured by the medical team that it was safe for baby. All went well and baby was fine. I just kept reminding myself that they wouldn’t do the procedure if the risks to baby were high.
Hope all goes well for you, whenever you have the surgery

Hi op did you have the surgery?
I’ve got to have both of mine done shortly and I just wondered how it went.
