What makes you say that? I was actually 47 when I had DD! IVF though.

Because as predicted a huge number of people have indeed responded with a number in the 40s. The actual 47 number was a tad facetious. But Mumsnet is the only place I know where everyone seems to wait until their 40s to have babies and think that's what the "sensible" folk do!? I just find it like a parallel universe on here!

Kudos to you for admitting your baby was via IVF at 47. That sounds realistic. I honestly have never known anyone, and I mean anyone, in real life to get naturally pregnant above the age of 44.

In London I know loads of people who had babies in their 40s...

HazeyjaneIII · 05/04/2025 10:13

I think London has one of the highest rates of women having babies over 40 (... the women, not the babies!)
...but country wide it's still only something like 1 -2 %, although this is obviously increasing, and it's something like 20% for women over 35.

everyone seems to wait until their 40s to have babies and think that's what the "sensible" folk do!?

I don't think it's necessarily this^^
I think society and expectations and circumstances are changing.

I had my children at 36, 38 and 41... nothing to do with waiting or being sensible, more to do with not meeting my dh until I was 27 and then having fertility issues and cancer.

CrepituErgoSum · 05/04/2025 10:14

Absolutely 33.

Had my second and definitely last baby at 33, first at 30, everything planned. Oh, such stable circumstances! Yep, definitely 33.

Until I started feeling ill a few months back. Went along to the doctor to investigate...was found to be pregnant.

I explained patronisingly to the doctor that this was completely impossible because I am 47 (yes, 47) and therefore far too old to conceive....plus we'd been using that very reliable pull out method of contraception since our last when I was 33... so this couldn't possibly be happening could it?

Could it?

I'm 26 weeks now anyway. At 47. Stable circumstances probably about to become a bit crazier, but we're all happy now we're over the shock!

Steppedonalegobrick · 05/04/2025 10:23

First and only at 40 (following 5 years ttc)

podulpopda · 05/04/2025 10:37

Had my last at 26, and nope I’m not old (or poor…or uneducated…or single for clarification, just odd for my generation!) It’s worked out really well for us, I’ve loved having my kids young and I feel really lucky to have been able to do it the way we have as it’s brought a lot of benefits, and I know most can’t for various reasons, whether they wanted to or not.

A huge number in their 40s?

Ok. This thread -
2 under 20
37 in their 20s
74 in their 30s
And 38 in their 40s
Of which 29 were under 45 (5 - 40, 14 - 41, 5 - 42, 2 - 43, and 3 - 44)

So out of 151 responses, 113 say under 40

I'm not sure the figures are backing up the claim tbh

Ineedcoffee2021 · 05/04/2025 11:57

22

Richtea67 · 05/04/2025 11:57

39, almost 42 now. Definitely no more!
