I keep passing the GTT…

This might be really dumb but hear me out. I’ve had a GTT at 16 and 28 weeks and passed. No idea what the numbers were. Last week they said I have to go for another because baby is now measuring very big so I have it on Friday. I’ll be 33 weeks.

I thought this time that I’d grab a monitor and test at home throughout the week (I’ve been feeling v unwell at times so I thought, if I could catch a high reading potentially being the cause of it I could let the team know). I’ve had 2 high fasting readings this week. Both times it’s been high I’ve double checked. I’ve tested a handful of times after meals and those readings were fine.

I just wonder if, at the GTT, by the time I drive to the hospital, park the car, walk from the car, sit around waiting etc… that the sugar levels have come down? Is this a ridiculous thought? 😵‍💫

They repeatedly told me my baby was very big. My GGTs were all fine, he was 8lb1oz, not big at all!
You walking slowly to the car park before the GGT is fine, you ambling along to the second blood test is also fine. As long as you aren’t speed walking/jogging or doing brisk activities between the drink and second blood test it’s fine.

I passed six before failing one at 37 weeks. She was born 6 days later. She weighs 2lbs less than they were “certain” she already weighed…

Yeah moving around does actually affect your fasting sugars. Do you know what they were during your previous GTTs?

I failed my GTT based on fasting level (5.3) on my first pregnancy and it is only my fasting level I have ever struggled with (which is the same on my current pregnancy). What were the high readings you had at home? If they were near or over 6, I think you should phone your midwife as you may be better to continue home monitoring rather than going through another GTT. Sorry it's making you feel unwell 🙁

Sorry if this is a silly question but what would parking your car etc have you do with your test? At all mine over two pregnancies, I went to the appt for 8am, had the blood taken, drank the glucose drink, sat in the waiting room for 2hr? Or 3hr? I forget. But then had the second blood test and was sent home. Is it not the same everywhere? Or are you worried that the first reading is inaccurate so when they compare the second one, it isnt a "true" comparison?

Ask them what your fasting and 2hr later tests are when you have it on Friday? If you call your midwife they might have the previous ones on your record too?

It’s not always linked to size though. I have a friend who had two very large babies ~9lb and 10lb and she didn’t have GD.

I just got diagnosed GD three weeks ago at 34 weeks gestation and my baby is on the 57th percentile, hasn’t really changed throughout. She did have a big stomach at 20 weeks but it’s now average. Pretty much average with a slightly larger head (DH and DS both have big heads).

I had none of the criteria for testing for it. The only tenuous link is my grandma had type 2 by the time she was 50-ish. I did get a thyroid issue during this pregnancy and that’s why the consultant put me in for the test at 34 weeks. Since then I have talked to a diabetes doctor at the hospital and she was puzzled on why I was even tested because I didn’t meet the criteria. She said thyroid and diabetes are not linked, but the consultant said otherwise so that’s confusing. I guess it is all hormonal and placenta based.

Fasting I got 4 (which is fine), 2hrs later I got 8.5 (7.8 is the limit). I was the highest in the group appointment. I have managed to diet control it really really well, mostly stay in range. I have had to completely stop eating chocolate though, plus banana, apple, milk on bran flakes all make me go above.

If your test on Friday is negative again take it as a positive, but do ask what the values are.

You could keep monitoring if you wanted to for peace of mind, I test first thing in the morning before any activity (needs to be <5.3), then 1hr after each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and those values need to stay < 7.8.

The other piece of advice the diabetes said is after a meal go for a 10-20 min walk and it will help to control the blood sugar levels.

@NewName2025 I think the OP is saying their first reading the fasting reading could be being lowered so then the second value has more to be increased by to reach the 7.8 limit.

I think a part of the requirement of the GTT is to be stationary and wait in the waiting room between the two blood tests. At least mine was.
