Had my GTT this morning (27+1) and the dreaded call this afternoon to say I’ve got GD.

my BMI pre pregnancy was 32, and I’ve tried to keep my weight gain to an absolute minimum. Last time i weighed myself, I had only put on 3kg, so I’m pretty gutted. I know it can’t be helped but doesn’t make it any easier.

anyone got any advice? any ideas for meals?

i had GD in both my pregnancies, diet controlled from 28 weeks (gave birth at 38+3) in my first, and insulin controlled from 15 weeks with my second (born at 40+0).

gestational diabetes U.K. have a Facebook support group but their website is brilliant, they have an essentials food list and lots of recipes. I copied down the whole of the food list, took out all the stuff I didn’t like, and asked chat gpt to make me a meal plan!

it is hard, but it’s only temporary. You haven’t failed by getting it (it’s the placenta and apparently it’s something the fathers dna does not the mothers!) and you won’t fail if you end up on meds.

Don’t let them bully you into early induction or c section, GD isn’t enough of a reason to do either, and neither is “large baby” on growth scans. Mine were highly inaccurate! Was told both were gonna be 9lbers, 98th centile babies. Both born 9th centile 6lbers.

the Facebook group is invaluable cos it’s run by dieticians and mothers who have had GD. NHS advice is shocking!!

Happy to chat if need be, my sugar babies are 8 months and 3 so I’ve been through it fairly recently.

Thank you @Sebora i will have a look. I wasn’t expecting it at all, as I have had no symptoms or anything. We’ve been to the supermarket tonight and stocked up on some more GD friendly foods, swapped out white pasta for wholemeal and stuff like that. I’m just worried I’m going to starve looking at the portion sizes they recommend 🤣

Don’t feel bad. It’s just caused by the placenta.
Im at the very bottom end of healthy BMI and still got it.

i found I couldn’t really handle carbs at all. Bread was out the window.

My ‘go tos’ were protein bagel thins.

Im now 1 year post partum, the skinniest I’ve ever been in my adult life and feel great.

Definitely join the GD Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/share/g/15y83F2kSa/?mibextid=wwXIfr and take a look at their website https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/?

I had the call at 28 weeks, and felt so lost with it all. I tried the NHS suggestions and good swaps but it wasn’t working for me, and I was starving with the portion sizes too. I’m 32 weeks now and still learning as the GD progresses and my tolerances change, but I’m not hungry all day every day and the support on the Facebook page has been invaluable.
