Growth scan at 36weeks

Mummy2925 · 26/03/2025 20:59

Had a growth scan today
(due to reduced movements all good )
and baby was measuring on the 94th centile and weighting 7lb 12oz.
i have a section booked anyways (previous emcs) definitely think it’s for the best now🫣

anyone else have a big baby at 36 weeks and what was there weight when they came?

I don't trust growth scans, I always hear that a baby was supposed to be big or small and then the opposite ends up being true. I was told I needed a cs at 36 weeks due to small baby, resisted and at 42 weeks she was a nice healthy weight. Same second time round

Mummy2925 · 27/03/2025 00:51

@Alwaystired2023 what weight was your baby at 36weeks vs there weight when born? 😊

Hmmm I was told the same and my boy was born by elective c section at 37 weeks - I kept a being told very big baby. I even had a very late diabetes test at around 35 weeks as they thought I was measuring not.

he was only 8lbs in the end

Adamsapple89 · 27/03/2025 02:46

The scans are so inaccurate. At my 36 week I was told my baby was 6lb she was born at 40 weeks weighing 6lb10

That's over the 96th centile.

Hello!

I have very recent experience of this, baby arrived yesterday morning via elective section.

She was estimated to be 7lb 14oz at my 36 week growth scan. She was born 10lb 1oz and very long with it!

I was absolutely convinced they were incorrect but it seems that sometimes they get it spot on.

CurlewKate · 27/03/2025 05:27

I had a 9lb9 and a 10lb6. Both measured pretty accurately all the way through including at the extra late scans. And that was a few years ago. So they do get it right!

I had a growth scan at 37+3 (delayed 36w scan as I had covid) and baby was estimated to be 5lbs 6oz. When she was born at 38w exactly, she was 5lbs 12oz. So relatively accurate in our case!

2in2022twoyearson · 27/03/2025 07:04

I had growth scans for the opposite reason and they were accurate, to monitor slow growth. Was just slightly on the smaller side 40 weeks at 7pounds 2 ozs. The us were accurate for me. The smallest measurements were femurs and he still has little legs as a 2 year old.

@2in2022twoyearson I wasn’t due a growth scan or anything as I am measuring on track on fundal height, my lo is >95th on femur length , I can’t see it to be too accurate as I’m only 5ft 1 and my partner is around 5th 6ish 😅

Following this as I’m 37 weeks and have a baby who’s been tracking 93rd-97th percentile throughout pregnancy.

@Bellebg are you being advised for a induction or section ?🙈

ive been told I can’t be induced due to previous section and I can’t go over 40 weeks either due to previous section regardless of big or small baby 🫣

39 weeks to the day.

Just being discharged now so all has gone well!

My first was only 6lb 4oz, I still can’t quite believe my second is so much bigger! 😂

Bellebg · 27/03/2025 11:23

@Mummy2925 I’ve been pushed to have an induction by the consultants but have declined so far as there’s no research I can find that says induction for suspected big baby actually changes any outcomes and my midwife agrees. So going to try and hold out and see what happens…in my mind I’ve said if I get to 41 weeks I’d choose to have a section over induction!

How are you feeling about everything? Xx

@SemperIdem glad to hear all went well 🥰 congratulations btw 💕

my first was 8lb 8oz at 41 weeks (wasn’t expecting them to be that size I was expecting a lil 6lb ish baba )

@Bellebg I feel like a lot of consultants like to do things “by the book” whereas midwives have more hands on experience and knowledge well in my experience anyways 🙈

v shocked at the size of baby not really changed anything for me though as I was having a planned section anyways , but I’d of liked a natural delivery due to quick healing and less hospital time but hey ho these things happen 🙈

best of luck with your baba🥰 when are you due 🙈

SJM1988 · 27/03/2025 12:10

My experience with growth scans and actual birth weight makes me very sceptical of them being accurate.

My youngest was apparently big. I had alot of scans due to other issues and she was always measuring big according to the consultants. I had gestational diabetes and at 36 weeks and apparently measuring 8lb. I think that was like 90ish percentile. I had further scans after 36 weeks and consistently big - always over 90th centile.

She arrived at 39 weeks exactly at 7lb 1oz - which was like 15th centile I think.

I didn't get pushed for an induction tho. I was advise she would be big and probably go into labour early. But my history meant they didn't push me to do anything. I was allowed to get to 40 weeks before they wanted to discuss what to do.

CurlewKate · 27/03/2025 12:19

I hesitate to say this and I’m not suggesting anyone does the same, but I had both my enormous babies by going into spontaneous labour a couple of days late, no pain relief and home the same day. My first labour was 12 hours almost exactly- the other 1 hour and 45 minutes! I was 38 and 41. So if you do want to avoid C-section or induction, ask to have it explained why they want to intervene. Size alone often isn’t a reason. Obviously be guided by the professionals, not by a whale song listening old hippy on the internet!

ecossegirl91 · 28/03/2025 08:10

Had a growth scan at 37 weeks due to baby position and was 7lbs 12oz. Delivered by c section at 38+6 and he was 8lbs 10oz so pretty accurate for me. 94th or 96th centile I think he was.
