Grateful for any advice on this one - I'm driving myself round the bend worrying about this.

I've been treating a corn for the last two days with a Scholl corn treatment which consists of a small medicated plaster containing 'salicyclic acid'. Foolishly, I didn't think twice about using it whilst pregnant and then it occured to me last night when reading the pack that perhaps I shouldn't have. Have removed the plaster and scrubbed my foot to remove any trace but now am worried sick that the active ingredient may have had a detrimental effect on the baby - I'm 17 weeks pregnant. I googled 'salicyclic acid' last night and wikipedia said shouldn't be used whilst pregnant. Can anyone tell me whether a relatively small dose on a corn plaster is likely to have done any harm or whether I'm just overreacting here? All advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I used it for verrucas in last pregnancy, GP prescribed it to me in prescription-only dose, actually, and neither of us gave the idea of it a 2nd thought.
Baby now 3 months old and seems pretty healthy.

I think the only risk from oral ingestion and a very small risk is actually to the mother, something to do with circulation. Anyway, avoid if you want to, but I doubt you could have done the slightest bit of harm.

it's fine

salicylic acid is aspirin

do not trust wiki for medical advice - if you must use the web use netdoctor.

Thanks both. Anxiety levels have returned to normal!

Sally,
Hi, am a podiatrist - think the level of sal acid in the plasters is very low - and is poorly absorbed theough the skin - pretty much anything you buy over the counter won't travel through your skin into your blood stream because if it can then it is usually classed as a drug.

I really would not worry, it is the same active ingrediant as contained in aspirin. If you still need to treat your corn I would reccommend just rubbing it daily with a foot file (you can get them in most chemists) when your feet are nice and dry (not after a bath when the skin is v soft).

Am sure you won't have caused any harm,

Sarah

If any more reassurance is needed I am 31 weeks & have been taking Aspirin since 12 weeks as adviced by my consultant! [Pre Eclampsia prevention, hopefully]

You'll be fine!
