Is getting pregnancy prescriptions impossible??

Is anyone else having the worst time trying to get prescriptions whilst pregnant? I'm on dispersible aspirin due to high risk but my doctor no longer prescribes for pregnant women. My midwife asks me to collect a prescription from a place you need to drive to and I don't drive and also opens and closes whilst I'm at work so can't get there anyways. The pregnancy assessment unit at my hospital is trying to help but the hospital are pushing back against them - but pharmacies won't let pregnant women buy aspirin!? Am I seriously going to have to get someone to buy them for me and pretend they're for themselves? This shouldn't be so hard surely? Anyone else in this boat?

Unsure why your GP won't prescribe them but it is likely due to funding and that they aren't funded to prescribe things on behalf or the obstetric team or some other bureaucratic reason.

If your midwife is able to prescribe them can you ask for your prescription to be 'put on the spine' then it goes to an electronic database where you can collect it from any pharmacy in England (hoping that you are- unsure about other locations in UK but I'd imagine there is similar).

Failing that you can order it online and it is cheap but annoying that you should have to when we get pregnancy exemptions for prescriptions.

Thank you for this. Yeah apparently it's due to funding. With my first the doctor would prescribe everything I needed and I'd have it within the hour! This time it's just insane.

Trying to hospital pharmacy now to see if they've received my prescription, if not I will absolutely do what you've suggested, thank you so much!

If it’s just normal aspirin, then it’s cheaper from the local shop than driving anywhere for it.

minnienono · 24/03/2025 16:11

You can buy aspirin cheaply at any shop, just check the dose you need

Lavenderrose92 · 24/03/2025 16:30

you can buy aspirin in home bargains/ b&m for 69p!

GreeneryGrass · 24/03/2025 16:48

Thanks everyone. Sorted now! Managed to get the prescription but I've also got some from the shop as well so that should cover me a while. What a faff!

I’m on 150mg aspirin a day for my pregnancy and I just buy 2 packs of 28 75mg gastro safe tabs, I ask for them at the pharmacy and they get them from behind. They’re not dispensable, costs about £2.50 for both packs.

I either bought off Amazon or got my husband to buy them.

Pleasecanyouadviseme · 24/03/2025 17:05

Just buy them online?

WhatNoRaisins · 24/03/2025 17:09

I was actually told by my consultant to get someone to buy them for me.

As PPS have said,I think your best bet would be to get someone to buy them for you. I think there has been issues with pharmacies selling/prescribing drugs to pregnant women for a long time. I can remember when I was pregnant, years ago (1983) I was refused the sale of travel sickness tablets, even though my GP had said this particular brand were fine to take at 7 months pregnant. I was also refused paracetamol, even though it was deemed safe to take during pregnancy, and was even questioned about a nasal spray!
