HCG sickness in pregnancy

Hey all,

Apologises, tital should be HG not HCG but I cant change it. I'm currently 15 weeks pregnant, almost 16. I was diagnosed with HG at week 7 and prescribed cyclzine and metroclopamide which didn't stop the sickness, but reduced the sickness. At 13 weeks, I went back to work working afternoons only which was manageable. They want me to up my hours this week. Sadly, my doctor will no longer prescribed me metroclopamide as it shouldn't be for long term use. I've been put on xnonevea which has good reviews but I haven't felt the benefit, my sickness has got so much worse. I'm also extremely lethargic, can't keep my eyes open. I feel work seems impossible again. Did anyone find the side effects of xnonevea got better? Or do I ask to go on ondasestron?

I felt so tired the first few weeks on xonvea but I’ve got used to it now. (I’ve been on it since 7 weeks and am now 28.) Hopefully you’ll start to adjust to it and feel better soon. 🤞

I was diagnosed with HG in the first trimester and have continued to be sick for the entire pregnancy unfortunately.
It's had peaks and troughs - not all day everyday for 9 months - but it's never gone away completely.

Currently I'm sick approx 5 times a week (39+2).

The main things to be wary of are staying hydrated and also that you are getting enough nutrients. This is something I've struggled with and low iron for example can cause low energy, fatigue etc. All my levels were low and I was told my body was basically in 'fasting mode' due to not getting the nutrients it needs - I've had an iron infusion and am taking supplements to try and help.

If the Xonvea isn't helping, another option is Ondansetron. I've had 3 HG pregnancies and personally I found Xonvea the most effective medicine with the least side effects. However, Ondansetron was the next best one for me and what I used in my first two pregnancies and had never heard of Xonvea then and wasn't offered it. The pregnancy sickness support charity is really good for advice.

Hope you soon recover, and I'd just get signed off work if you need it. I had 3 months off in my first two pregnancies and 6 weeks off in my third one.

Hey OP. You can be signed off for pregnancy related illnesses for as long as is required. They are not treated as regular absences so cannot count towards disciplinary proceedings or be taken as poor performance/used as a reason for dismissal. Fact. This is absolutely the case and is written clear as day in the equality act. Do you feel under pressure to work? If so, try to reframe that? You and your baby are the most important thing right now. If you weren't pregnant and being this sick, enough to take regular anti emetics, what would you do? What is your relationship like with your manager? Mine made it very clear that I should take as much time off as needed when I was pregnant.

I really feel for you. I had HG in my pregnancy and whereas the vomiting went away by 22 weeks I still felt quite sick until week 30. I had a spell in hospital too and was very dehydrated with electrolyte imbalance. I pushed it too much with work at times and I wish I hadn't.

I recommend ondanaetron it made the most difference for me. The only downside was the constipation which is very very common. I started taking lactulose along side it which really helped that side of things.

I took promethazine on top of this which helped me sleep through the nausea at night.

Apart from that, rest and having an afternoon nap were helpful when I was signed off.

I hope you find something that works for you. It does get better, even though right now it must feel terrible for you. Sending you lots of positivity and a big hug.
