Chickenpox danger

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and my co-worker who sits next to me announced the other day that her daughter has chickenpox. She seemed to think this was not an issue as she herself "didn't have spots" FFS! I've since been told that chicken pox has a two week incubation period before the spots even show during which time it's at it's most contagious.

Worse still a friend of mine who also works in our tiny office is twenty-something weeks pregnant.

To clarify I am definately not immune. I had the blood test to prove this. I don't know if my friend is immune

What do you think I should do?

go to docs or mw and mention what you have found out at work, they should be able to tell you what risk, if any, there will be for you.

Has your co-worker with the daughter had chicken pox?

Coolmama · 13/05/2008 18:52

Have the same problem with CP - am not immune - my Dr told me you had to have a good 10 min face-to-face contact with the infected person/child to be at risk, but I would check with your GP anyway.

Coolmama, I've had more than 10mins face2face contact. She works about a metre and a half away from me

I am sorry to hear about this but what could she do PembsLass?
she could hardly stay off work in case she infected you, could she?

PembsLass · 13/05/2008 19:00

No, Franny it's not a rant against her it's an anxious question about what I should do.

You do need to go and see either your GP or your midwife. I'm sorry you find yourself in this position, it's horrible worrying about things when you are pregnant

Coolmama · 13/05/2008 19:01

Meant to say that you have to have at least 10 mins with her sick child (not mum) - sorry for the confusing post

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2008 19:08

oh dear
it was the FFS bit and 'she seemed to think this was not an issue' that threw me

is there anything you CAN do?
have you contacted your midwife?

I do hope all is well

FWIW I work with groups of children on a Friday and several times on a Saturday, a parent has rung me to say "oh dear dc has just come out in chicken pox, so sorry, I expect all the others will get it"

not one case of it being passed on at my group AFAIK, and the children there are all in fairly close contact with one another for an hour at a time
