Had a pelvic xray not knowing I was 3 weeks pregnant

Help! Myself and my partner had been trying for a baby for a little while and I had been having issues with my hips. So needed a pelvis Xray. I had this last week and then found out 5 days later I am pregnant - now 4 weeks. (So 3 weeks 1 day when I had the Xray). I am now really stressing that I have massively increased my chance of miscarriage or health issues for the baby long term? Has anyone had a similar experience with a good outcome? Thank you :)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

You and baby will be fine. It’s one X-ray. However, don’t they ask beforehand if there’s any chance you could be pregnant? Surely you would/should have said yes?

gamerchick · 20/03/2025 20:03

Didn't they ask? I've always been asked before an x-ray.

I should have yes but was convinced I wasn’t pregnant that cycle. But on reflection, I should have said there was a possibility and feel really stupid for it. I was having fertility investigations so was convinced I’d need IVF to have a baby

When i’ve had x-rays in the past and they’ve asked me if i thought i was pregnant i always said yes just in case and then they covered my belly with some lead. Im sure things will be fine

Try not to worry. I got appendicitis in my first pregnancy and had to have an MRI

Natsku · 20/03/2025 21:36

I wouldn't worry, one x-ray is extremely unlikely to cause any issues.
If it makes you feel better, I had tons of x-rays while pregnant (x-ray guided kidney catheter insertion and x-ray guided cystoscope to remove a stent, both involved taking a series of x rays so much have been scores of them altogether, with everyone else wearing lead aprons but not me!) and that foetus is now a healthy 14 year old!

But an MRI doesn't use radiation like an X-ray! MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and is considered safe during pregnancy.

Congrats OP. I'd mention the X-ray to your GP and eventually midwife. They may/may not offer additional ultrasounds to check growth. Best of luck.

KungFuSock · 20/03/2025 21:56

Hopefully your midwife will be able to help put your mind at ease. Many years ago, ultrasounds weren’t a thing, so my mum had quite a few x-rays during pregnancy (throughout the whole pregnancy) to check baby..that baby is a healthy 47year old now (hope that helps!)

An MRI doesn't use x-rays, it uses a very large magnet. It actually visualises all of the water throughout your body, which is why an MRI is used for looking at the soft tissues.

I honestly wouldn’t worry at all OP (I know easier said than done). Miniscule chance of any problem. If you’re a details person you might find this useful https://mothertobaby.org/fact-sheets/x-rays/ congratulations and all the best with your pregnancy
