18 weeks no movement, 3rd baby & posterior placenta

Hi all,

I'm 18 weeks + 2 days pregnant. It is my third baby and it's been confirmed I have a posterior placenta. Ive had a few scans (NHS & private) and they've all been fine and he was a little wriggler and never stopped moving.

I had a scan recently which shown everything was fine and he was moving alot on the scan and he wasn't facing my placenta so this wouldn't have been cushioning anything. But I'm really worried as I still can't feel anything not even flutters. I know with my previous pregnancies it was around 20 weeks but I had an anterior placenta cushioning the movements so put it down to this.

Everything I've read or been told says you usually detect movements earlier (around 16-18 weeks) for subsequent babies and posterior placenta. My friend is also pregnant too with same placenta position and no. of babies and has felt loads. My next scan is 2 weeks away

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Thank you xx

I was 22/23 weeks with my first and 20 weeks with my second (posterior placenta).
Anything from 16-24 weeks is considered normal

I'm only 16+1 but I feel your pain, I haven't felt her move yet! Keep thinking the worst. I felt my son at 15+4, so I know I'm being ridiculous but.. I have read a lot of ladies say they didn't feel baby until 19-22 weeks so I wouldn't worry x

AutumnScream · 21/03/2025 14:49

Im 19 weeks, 2nd baby posterior placenta. Baby didnt move much on scans so far but i was told i should be expecting loads of movements. So far i have felt the odd flutter once a day then nothing. Google is useless when i try find answers.

What answers are you trying to find? This is completely normal.

19/20 weeks is very average to start feeling movements and it's normal for them to be quite sporadic at first. Once a day, even going a day without feeling anything, is all totally normal at that stage.

It will increase a lot over the next month and beyond

My reply was to another poster who said Google was useless when they tried to find answers.....I was asking them what answers they were looking for.

All the info I've seen is quite clear about the normal window to feel movements, how they might feel initially and when to start expecting any kind of pattern.

Google gives a rough guideline on timeframes that seem to go against what my midwife has told me, in that i might feel a flutter and then go three dayswith nothing at all. Its stressful because with dd she moved all the time. Ds doesn't seem to move at all ever. Even on scans hes totally still.

I know they all seem to say different which doesn't help.

When I was pregnant with my two sons, I was always going to have my movements checked and they said boys are usually lazier than girls. Hopefully he will start moving more soon for you 🙏

I genuinely don't know what you are googling? I type in 'when will I first feel baby movements' and page after page comes up all saying 16-24 weeks is normal.

If I type in 'how regular baby movements at first' I get results saying that it's normal to feel them 'every now and then' in early pregnancy then they become more regular. Top results also say that they should become more frequent as the second trimester progresses.

The OP is just looking for reassurance which I absolutely understand.
everyone has different experiences and I completely understand why there is worry. Being haughty and dismissive isn’t helpful

I don't think it's helpful to play up to anxieties, the best reassurance is not only our own experiences (I posted mine) but also backing it up with the actual information from the medical and science profession which you can find online.

We're all different but that's the kind of response I personally appreciate whenever I have any worries (which I do, regularly).

I think when we feel anxious we can end up down a rabbit hole focusing only on the more worrying tidbits and gambits found on the Internet instead of the vast majority of experiences and information.
