Hi mamas :)

Just found out I am pregnant and to say I am shocked is an understatement considering I've been on the pill for the past 17 years! Didn't believe it at first so took another 3 and all show positive

As you can imagine I have a let of questions as a first time mum and don't know what to do from here? If anyone can advise, that would be great

Thank you

Congratulations!

check with your GP surgery receptionist what happens in your area. With me they gave me the number of the midwife service and I referred myself.

If you haven't been taking folic acid then it's vital you start on that immediately.
Obviously the usual things like no more alcohol, check the NHS advice for what not to eat, reduce caffeine etc

I contacted a hospital where I wanted to have my baby and called them up, they they asked me simple info such as name etc and last period date and then booked me in for the booking apt with a community midwife (which happened around 8/9weeks). As pp said start taking folic acid. Other than that not much really.

Congratulations!

Give your GP a call and see if you refer through them or online.

Be prepared for a weird few weeks ahead as nothing really happens in early pregnancy, no-one confirms you're pregnant or anything like that. There will be an early pregnancy unit at your hospital should you have any medical issues like pain or heavy bleeding etc but otherwise you're on your own.

After referral, you'll eventually get a booking in appointment for 8-10 weeks. That's your first appointment and is mostly completing a health questionnaire about you, your partner, your families medical history etc. They'll also take blood, check BP, urine and you will be graded as low or high risk.

You'll then get booked in for a scan between 11 and 14 weeks

Congratulations. I have just found out I am pregnant yesterday. Very early days. (4 weeks). I am very anxious and excited at the same time. I am new to this and not sure if it’s too early to ring my GP?

Muffintopgalore · 24/03/2025 06:32

Do you know how far along you are?

PixieDust10 · 24/03/2025 08:01

That’s exactly how I feel! My partners just made me take 2 more tests as it hasn’t sunk in. Iv just called my gp and they referred me to the online forms. Crazy times ahead for us! X
