Got a BFP yesterday, went to doctor today and she did a test and got a faint positive - told me I might be miscarrying

I posted yesterday saying I'd just done apositive pregnancy test - both lines very very dark so it seemed quite definite. Also boobs are achy, feeling a bit queasy and tired. Went to doctor this morning and she did a test just to make sure and it only came up with a faint line, not as dark as my test. She said beacuse its faint I might be about to have a miscarriage because my hormone level may have dropped and told me to book in with the MW anyway but look out for cramping/bleeding in case I am losing the baby.

She was a new doctor I'd not seen before and I'm not sure how much I trust her - she also seemed very vague about what foods to avoid in pregnancy - just told me to cut out soft cheese and liver and that soil has listeria in it (what??!). So I'm hoping she doesn't know what she's talking about and she's wrong about possible miscarriage.

Anyway I did another test when I got home and it was a dark line again (not faint at all) and still feeling sicky/sore boobs.

What do you think?

the tests they do at drs are different from uor high st ones - they may not pick up on hormone levels so ealry and cearly if you are just 4weeks etc.

stay positive.

Possibly you're testing with a more sensitive test than the doctors ? Sounds like she was somewhat insensitive.

Soil should sort of be avoided but due to toxoplasmosis not listeria AFAIK so she wasn't completely wrong but not as informed as you'd hope in a doctor.

Can you check what sensitivity of test she was using ?

LaylaandSethsmum · 13/05/2008 13:02

A positive test is a positive test regardless of how dark the line is, if your symptoms also point towards a continuing pregnancy then try not to worry too much. At this very early stage its all in the lap of the gods really. Good luck.

belgo · 13/05/2008 13:02

No, a faint test really does not necessarily mean you are about to miscarriage - there's no way a urine test can tell that. The only way of knowing how well a pregnancy is going is by taking blood test. The doctor probably just had a test that was less sensitive then the one you did, or the urine you used was stronger then the sample you gave her.

I'm sure you know that with every pregnancy, there is a risk of miscarriage, but as long as you don't have pain or bleeding, I don't think you have any particular cause for concern.

Congratulations

Not at all true.

Unless you start bleeding/spotting and/or have a scan that shows otherwise, there is no way to know if you are miscarrying.

belgo · 13/05/2008 13:05

AS for her advice - Stay away from soft cheese, wash/peel all fruit/vegetables, make sure all food is cooked properly. Not sure about liver.

Regarding soil: I think the risk is toxoplamosis, caused by cat wee. So stay away from gardening/ cats - that's the advice I was given because I have no immunity against toxoplasmosis. Always wash your hands well immediately after contact with cats/soil.

pucca · 13/05/2008 13:05

what ridiculous things to say to you, i am very angry on your behalf!

Normally the test the GPs do are 50/100miu, supermarket tests are 25/50miu. So that explains why her test was fainter than yours.

Take no notice of her, as everyone else has said as long as you don't have bleeding/pain you are fine.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2008 13:07

you can stroke cats.

you just can't change their litter tray.

soil - well, i've done plenty of gardening and am pregnant.

but only with soil bought in a bag and disposable gloves and then thoroughly washed my hands.

RIBS · 13/05/2008 13:07

Do doctors just like to scare the crap out of people or are they trained to do it???

As far as im aware a line is a line no matter how faint. I would have thought if you were miscarrying you'd be having symtoms already.

I was told cos I had bleeding at 7 wks it WAS either eptopic or miscarrying. Im now nearly 23 weeks. Sounds like was as clued up as my dr!!

luvaduck · 13/05/2008 13:08

i think its positive, don't worry
the kits we use in the surgery are much less sensitive than clearblue etc (cheaper nhs ones)
toxo is in soil
have you got an emmas diary - good food list there

hope this helps

and this

luvaduck · 13/05/2008 13:09

oh and congratulations

iwouldgoouttonight · 13/05/2008 13:12

Thanks for all your reassurance - that's made me a bit less worried.

I actually know about the foods to eat/avoid and about toxoplasmosis from when I had DS. Was just saying to reassure myself that I know more than the doctor (I knew soil was toxoplasmosis and not listeria) so was hoping if she was wrong about that she may be wrong about possible miscarrying.

She phoned me later to ask me to book in for a scan this week (they can now do it at the surgery) so will hopefully feel more positive after that. That will also help date the pregnancy as I have PCOS and no idea when I ovulated and last period was in Jan!

I think a letter of complaint to the GP practive would be in order. As others have said, a pg test will not tell you if you are about to miscarry and she had no right telling you that.

Congratulations

TotalChaos · 13/05/2008 13:13

I had exactly the same with my GP - boots test came up clear as bell, docs test came up faintly. I seriously don't think that the GP tests are always as good as the home tests. So I wouldn't worry at all about what she said.

Nappyzone · 13/05/2008 13:16

What a pile of crud making you worry needlessley - the gp tests are cheap as chips so not as sensitive as home ones. Anyway couldnt it be you had a gallon of water b4 gp so more diluted anyway -
Congrats by the way xx

MINNIE1 · 13/05/2008 13:26

I had the same thing, Home test was dark lines and Dr's was faint (and have 2dd's and one on the way) But all in all a line is a positive and no matter how dark or faint. I would go with scan, but remenber you will not see a heatbeat till at least 6 weeks.
She should not have mentioned anything about MC as a pregnancy test cant tell you that. Hope you are not worrying to much.

iwouldgoouttonight · 13/05/2008 14:53

Just been thinking about the scan - do you think they'll actually be able to see anything this early on? I'm guessing it must be about 2 weeks since ovulation/conception so surely the baby would be minisule?? And if its too early to see a heartbeat then how do they tell the pregnancy is ok?

I wish I'd seen another doctor now - this one has got me all worried!

From about five weeks of pregnancy (three weeks after conception) you should be able to see an embryo. From about six weeks you should be able to see a heartbeat.
