Constipation, what helps?

I’ve been on odnasetron for a few weeks now which has helped so much! BUT I’ve been so constipated, I haven’t been the toilet for over a week now and I feel awful… 😞

Currently waiting for the doctor to phone me back but is there anything I can buy like drinks or certain foods to help in the meantime?

Movicol/macrogol

Use a glycerin suppository to get things out, then movicol every day

Coffee! Or if you’re sticking to decaf, try that

If it doesn't make you panic at the thought, I just tried kefir recently and had to research to discover that, yes, it makes some people poop to be American for a moment. It certainly did me! It's supposed to be great for your microbiome but I suppose I might be cautious about being pregnant but just thought I'd say, my feeling is it's just a kind of yoghurt!

Prunes, peaches, grapes, persimmons (although not in season now)… any fruit except maybe apples. Lots of water. Chia seeds work well too. You can make a little chia seed “pudding” by mixing them with chocolate milk and letting them congeal overnight. It’s quite yummy.

Warm drinks throughout the day, walking, Kiwi fruit in the morning, when you are on the toilet try and get your knees above your hips, blowing your nose also helps for some reason ( whilst on the toilet )

Ondansetron is a different level.

You will need glycerine suppositories initially and then daily laxatives, both a softener and a stimulant. You can’t buy over the counter if you’re pregnant. Don’t stop the laxatives while you are still taking ondansetron.

Thanks for all your reply’s everyone. My doctor has just prescribed lactulose so I’m hoping this will work… Just a bit worried it might cause me to suddenly need to go to the loo which isn’t what you need when your out and about 😂

Prunes were a life saver for me… and they’re good for you 😃

Negangirlxx · 14/03/2025 16:39

I had lactulose, as iron tablets totally blocked me up, and believe me, the lactulose was plenty good enough!

I was told by a pharmacist they couldn’t give glycerine suppositories when pregnant, as they can cause bad cramping, so they won’t let you have them. They said for pregnant ladies, they only thing they could recommend was lactulose.

I took psyllium husk because it came with my vitamin package. Seemed to work well.

Otherwise oatbran? Linseed, chia seeds

Ondansetron is soooo bad for this, especially when coupled with general pregnancy constipation.
Lactulose should help but it takes a few days to build up in your system, in my experience it definitely isn’t an instantly working ‘I need to go RIGHT NOW’ type of laxative.

I was on a really high dose of ondansetron for a while and had to take senna and lactulose, but now I don’t need either as my body has adapted and I’m on a much lower dose.

Honestly the only thing that worked for me (diet changes/foods DIDNT) was Fybogel. You buy boxes of the sachets on Amazon and mix it with a bit of water, drink one in the morning and one at night. It’s just like a thick orange juice, not the nicest thing and it took 2 days to kick start anything but it worked for sure! I only took 2 days worth and was able to go after not pooping for 6 days 😩 and it’s safe for pregnancy. The GP may be able to give you something but I couldn’t wait for an appointment before atleast trying it and I’m glad I did! Still got loads left too!
