Pregnancy and New Job

Hello Mumma’s,

I have a bit of a moral dilemma, I am currently 12+3 and have just landed a new job. I might have to wait 2/4 weeks before I join there. When would be the best time to let my employers know about the pregnancy? The new job is a desk job with minimal risk. The company is my dream company and I will absolutely enjoy the work I’ll do there. My plan is to work for the next 6/7 months then take 6/7 months off and if possible return back to the same company (they aren’t legally required to hold that post for me!). This is also my first child so I am not sure how I’ll feel but to be honest, I am the primary breadwinner and being away from work will impact the household income. I am also 41 which is an advance age for pregnancy so I don’t want to tell people about it (especially those who don’t know me yet!) till absolutely essential. Please help this Mumma-to-be.

I think They are legally required to keep your job open if you take less than 1 yr

If you take 26 weeks or less, they have to offer you your same job anything after that it has to be a similar position with same pay. Most company policy is to let them know at the 20 week mark. If you feel like your job doesn’t require the risk assessment, could you wait it out till then?

If you're in the uk, it may affect your mater out leave if you're already pregnant when you take the job. It may be worth checking the policy if you're able to?

Hi, I started a new job when pregnant. Just so you’re aware you won’t be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay unless you stay in your current job until 15 weeks (I think) before your due date (you can check exact dates on the government website). I delayed handing in my notice for this reason, then got SMP from my old company.
You should still be entitled to Maternity Allowance but this doesn’t include the first 6 weeks at 90% pay.
