home scans

Hi Everyone, I was just wondering what your thoughts were of having a private ultrasound scan of your baby by a qualified professional sonographer in the comfort of your own home?
I'm thinking gender reveal parties, baby showers, or just a scan with your family and friends to get some pictures and check on your babies health.

Is this something that expecting families would be interested in, and if there was this option, would you like it? I'm just getting a feel for whether it would be preferred over going to a private clinic.

Thank you all so much in advance.

I don’t know anybody who is interested in a ‘gender reveal’, other than the parents to be. I’d be quickly thinking up an excuse if I was invited to a home scan. Awful idea making this a spectator event.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 12/03/2025 19:43

How would you ensure the equipment was set up correctly?
What if the scan revealed bad news?

I think there are some things that should be done in a professional, medical setting.

sel2223 · 12/03/2025 19:45

I've never felt like I needed an audience at a scan so the idea of some sort of scan party doesn't appeal at all.

And even with hubby and I, I prefer it in a professional setting. My reasons for getting a scan have always been for reassurance, medical reasons etc not a bit of fun or a show.

PP makes a very valid point, what if there was bad news?

mynameiscalypso · 12/03/2025 19:45

Can you imagine having a live scan during a baby shower and it being bad news?!?

I know people have scans for all sorts of reason, and I had several private scans in pregnancy, but they are above all medical treatment.

SittingNextToIt · 12/03/2025 19:48

Is this a serious question?

As in you've invited 20 people and lie back, expose your belly, rub gel on it and look at the screen to potentially be told there's no heartbeat?

Is this a serious thought you've had?

cait967 · 12/03/2025 19:48

Oh no that’s horrible. Scans are not always a good experience. Please reconsider this

gamerchick · 12/03/2025 19:56

Sorry dude I don't think this would take off. It would just take one instance of no heartbeat and it's over.

I'm surprised a professional would think this was a good plan though.

if you put the 'parties' aside and it was just a reassurance scan in your own home with your partner? women who have no transport, struggling to get around? or that dont like the clinical setting.

@homescanner how would you transport your equipment? Ensure it's set up and working correctly?
People like photos, how would that work?
What about insurance?
TBH I think the CQC would have major issues with it as an idea.

chakrakkhan · 12/03/2025 20:24

Are you a sonographer OP? I work in this field. I cannot imaging a single one of the sonogs I work with entertaining this as a remotely good or sensible idea/use of their skills. You don't talk like a Sonographer, (live scanning for gender reveals parties and baby showers...hmm) so I'm guessing you actually have no medical obstetric experience and want to employ other sonogs to do this. You will struggle to find any reputable, suitably qualified medical professionals that will be interested in putting their registration and career on the line for this.

How are you planning to transport an ultrasound machine around? What are you planning to do if there are problems with the baby? Safeguarding? Insurance? CQC inspections?

Iloveeverycat · 12/03/2025 20:25

No

Hi, thanks for your reply.
This is an idea I have been approached by from a senior obstetric sonographer for the NHS, I was just putting the feelers out for feedback to see if it would be something that, if they decided to go down the private route, would home scans be something that would be wanted rather than a clinic.
Not necessarily parties, (that was me) but just reassurance scans for people at home that cant get to a clinic for what ever reason. .
