Maternity exemption at 6 weeks

Hi,

I haven't had my booking appt yet but I need thrush and UTI treatment, can I go to the GP and get my maternity exemption certificate while I'm there? Don't want to pay £20 if I don't have to.

Thanks!

6 weeks is very early, I didn’t get mine until later in pregnancy, I can’t remember exactly but I think I’d at least had my 12 week scan.

No harm in asking but I'm not sure you can get it until your booking appointment. My midwife emailed it to me during that appointment, I think I was about 8 weeks.

Negangirlxx · 12/03/2025 11:21

I doubt they will give it to you this early on.

I don’t think I had mine until around the 12 week scan.

You can ask for a receipt to reclaim the costs once you get your maternity exemption. It is a specific receipt though, not the usual one so you need to explain the issue and request it from the pharmacy. Once you have the exemption you can return to the pharmacy and they will refund it.

No. You’ll get it at 20 weeks in most places and 12 in some, and it can be backdated by up to a month.

speak to your GP surgery about the form

In my first pregnancy my GP filled in the form whilst I was there and as she had prescribed me antiemetics

I've had 3 pregnancies since July and each time I fill in the form for contact with the midwife as soon as I find out and that includes the form for mat exception form. She phones me to book my booking and I ask her for the exception certificate and within about 10 minutes the certificate is emailed to me. I'm on regular medication and get hyperemesis so go on antiemetics early in pregnancy. I've never had an issues getting it before my booking appointment

Got mine at about 20weeks I think.

I'd be suprised if you can get it before the scan as there's no evidence of a pregnancy. A GP appointment to save you £20 would be a massive waste of an appointment and cost the NHS more.

It's not a waste of an appointment because I have to go there anyway to get medication.

I've had mine 4 times before my booking appointment, I've just had to ask! My GP did it the first time and my midwife when phoning to arrange my booking appointment the other 3 times. The first time it was my GP that brought it up!

SErunner · 12/03/2025 20:03

Really?! I asked with this recent pregnancy and was told it would be issued at booking appt. How annoyingly inconsistent!

ScoobyBooby · 12/03/2025 20:27

Your GP/midwife might be able to apply online for your maternity exemption, you will get your copy via email soon as they register your details . Otherwise they will need to apply via post. You can apply at any point during your pregnancy and upto a year after birth.
Id probably just pay for it , keep your receipt and claim it back later

I'm on regular medication and need antiemetics in early pregnancy. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. They have always gone "there's no point wasting money on something you can get for free!"
This is across two different trusts. As I moved between having my first and trying for number 2

Ummusomebody · 13/03/2025 09:53

Also applied for mine at 5 weeks and got it before week 6. Hyperemesis so maybe that was why

Lulu89x · 13/03/2025 10:23

I got mine at my booking appointment. I was around 9 weeks at the time.
