Lots of hiccoughs today?

I think my baby's hiccoughing - I'm 25 weeks but don't think I've felt them before.

They feel a bit different to the kicks I've felt so far and are pretty regular (every few seconds) and they're in one place, and I've felt a few kicks somewhere else at the same time. Baby seems to have had a few bursts of them since I woke about 4am.

I feel very silly for asking and I'm not anxious about it (yet) but just want to check that lots of hiccoughs in a short space of time isn't a bad sign/a reason to call midwife for a check? I have no idea if baby's had them before or if I've felt them before tbh so couldn't tell you if it's more or less than usual. 🙃 TIA!

It's very normal (and the bigger they get the more annoying the hiccoughs become!)

Thank you! Baby seems to have had them loads today. I have to admit they have lost their charm after 12 hours of having having them on and off...

Oh dear, yes I can see that would happen 😂just so you know babies that hiccough a lot on the womb tend to do so a lot in their first few months as well. The sweetest little sound but very annoying when they can't sleep because of it!

Polistock · 12/03/2025 17:44

Mine was very hiccupy in my tummy and a very hiccupy baby. You're right though, after the initial 'ahhh, hiccups 🥰', you do start to think 'come on, mate, drink a glass of water backwards'.

I'm 27 weeks pregnant and I think I must get this at least every other day now. Almost always when I've just got comfy in bed. At first I found it cute but the novelty has worn off now 😂

DD1 had hiccups every single day when I was pregnant. She's still very hiccupy now at nearly 4yo. She also had terrible reflux as a baby (not sure if the two things are related), so make sure you invest in plenty of muslins, OP!

OptimisticRealist2024 · 13/03/2025 05:48

Bracing for the reflux, just because so many people seem to have seen a correlation!

I don't think baby stopped for more than 30 mins at a time yesterday. I ended up calling my midwife just to ask if it can change overnight. I just couldn't get over how often baby suddenly seemed to be having them. Kicking more, too. (Hiccoughs keeping baby awake? I have no idea.) Apparently neither are a cause for concern.

5.48am and already had a bout for 20 mins. 🥴 It's going to be a long 15 weeks...

Oh my gosh I had no idea there was a link between hiccoughs and reflux. My little one was a very sicky baby for the first 6 months. Definitely muslins are the ready OP!

SErunner · 13/03/2025 10:06

Just to add balance, I had a horribly hiccupy baby during pregnancy who went on to be the least sicky baby once on the outside (I had millions of muslins I didn't know what to do with)! Second has also been hiccupy - hoping for the same outcome!

LaMadrilena · 13/03/2025 11:06

Mine had hiccups in the womb every afternoon without fail, and after birth as well. I managed to panic myself with some article I read on about page 15 of Google results, about a correlation between hiccups and some awful outcome or other. I later realised that research had been done in sheep. And DD was never a sicky or refluxy baby - definitely below average in that respect!
