Eating for 50,000

I'm 33 weeks. I've put on 6 stone. I've never had a weight issue and always eaten what I fancied and BMI has always been normal. For some reason I have eaten excessively and I just haven't been able to stop myself. Midwives etc really unbothered and just say not to worry. What I'm scared about is that this insatiable appetite will carry on once the baby is born... or will I just go back to normal and eat normally again? I really understand how hard it must be now for people who struggle with their weight I have zero power over the urge to eat.

Depends. If you breastfeed that can make you feel hungry. But that does ease after your supply settles I find.

That does sound like a lot, were you particularly underweight to start with?

Are you drinking enough water do you think? I had to drink litres of the stuff when pregnant!

I wasn't underweight. Was 58kg and 5 ft 4 so totally normal and average. It's just been so extreme. I am drinking masses. Basically something is going into my mouth almost constantly so water is a big factor! I've always felt like I can just intuitively trust my body with what it needs and never struggled with my weight but this feels mad to me!

@magicstar2020 I'm in my second pregnancy and feeling this already! I'm
Only 16 weeks but have gained a lot of weight, way more than previous pregnancy - I'm around the same height and weight as you pre pregnancy. I didn't have this at all with my first but I just feel hungry constantly and feel sick if I don't eat

jackiesgirl · 12/03/2025 22:11

I have been starving my entire pregnancy bar about 2 weeks of sickness. I know I've put on loads of weight as my bump is measuring out of range but baby is measuring fine, so it's me that's big! I'm not worrying about it - if my body needs extra food to grow my baby so be it and I'll deal with it afterwards. As someone who normally weighs themselves a few times a week I haven't done it once and I'm happier that way.

Are you excessively thirsty? Might be worth a gestational diabetes test if you feel you're needing to drink a lot

jackiesgirl · 12/03/2025 23:39

Don't know if that question was for me or OP but yes I've had the GTT test and all fine just greedy 😊

angelcake20 · 12/03/2025 23:45

I put on 3 stone with DS and thought that was a lot but I was constantly craving food, often used to stop in McDonald's on the way home from work and still found myself weak enough to have to sit down at times. It did mostly go after DS was born. Had nothing of the kind with DD so I assumed it was a boy thing (though I put on nearly as much eating through my maternity leave second time round!).

No it was for the OP as she said she's drinking masses

magicstar2020 · 13/03/2025 22:17

@bananasandtoasties
I was worried about GD as my sister is type 1 so I was more at risk, but I've had it and it came back fine.

It's just so uncomfortable. It's so so hard carrying around so much extra weight. I'm devastated about it yet I honestly just can't stop myself.

@thismotherhoodthing
I think mine started with having to eat to stop myself from feeling sick, but it just carried on and on and more and more! I can only hope that I can't do too much more damage in the few weeks I have left, and that I'll go back to normal eating wise once the baby is out! I hope you're ok? Do you crave anything specific?

Everyone is different but jsut to reassure you - in my first pregnancy I’ve put 25 kg and lost it all by 4 months pp, I was BF as well and the weight just melted away. My appetite was also back to normal. Now I’m 39 weeks and I’ve put 22.5 kg but I’m so unbothered this time and my midwife is not concerned at all. My bp hasn’t changed, no issues with anything really. And actually I’ve only eaten a lot in the first trimester to fight the nausea, after I’ve been eating pretty much normally and still gained loads of weight.

Have you had the baby yet? I am mostly craving savoury food all the time. I am having a carby breakfast like a bagel whereas pre-pregnancy would usually have eggs or yoghurt and then am craving food again an hour later! I’ve been trying to have a cup a soup just to fill me up a bit. I don’t seem to be able to go more than two hours without eating. Weighed myself this morning and I’m a lot heavier than my last pregnancy despite starting off the same weight. It’s very disheartening but not sure what I can do about it other than try to eat healthy stuff as much as possible

QueefQueen80s · 05/04/2025 20:03

My weight gain carried on as mine was a bad sleeper but once that improved then normal me returned.. but yes it was like a beast was unleashed for a while! Like that’s what my true self wants to do. But most of the time it’s controlled

CortieTat · 07/04/2025 19:02

I exclusively breastfed all my children for the first six months and I was (am) constantly hungry. It has always been much easier for me to watch what I eat during pregnancy. I am doing my best to eat well and not overeat post partum but the struggle is real.

magicstar2020 · 25/03/2026 12:34

I wanted to update on this incase anyone sees this and is worried about their weight. … almost a year on, my appetite returned to normal, I’ve done zero dieting and no exercise and more or less I’ve returned to normal, still want to lose a bit more. I’ve exclusively BF. I will start making an effort to get into better shape now that summer is round the corner, but I am pleased
to say it didn’t stick around x
